Hi people
It has been quite along time since i used this forum.
After keeping tropical fish for about 12 years i am now nearly ready to give up.
I have had my tank for about 3 years now, about 6 months ago i got really bad green blanket algae, i have tried emptying the tank and starting again keeping a quarter of the water so i can put my fish back in it. The algae just keeps coming back. Now its just brown algae growing on the glass every day.
I have a 4 foot tank which contains 37 gallons of water.
Arcadia light which is on for 6 hours a day/

try any algae killing Fishes? try ottos or shrimps if that doesnt work try a blackout

Nerite snails are excellent for keeping glass, rocks and broad leaved plants free of most algae. Shrimp and otto's can also help, not tried otto's myself though. I don't find shrimp effective for algae on glass and I wonder if the discus may see them as food?

What wattage of lighting do you have and do you have any live plants in the tank?

No plants at the moment, took them all out because they got infested with gren algae

Brown diatoms are usually most common in newer setups so it's kind of odd that they should be showing up now. Did you make any changes to the tank lately?

Otos sure love diatoms but make sure you supplement their diet with veggies once the diatoms go away. Common ramshorn snails are also great little grazers.

To stop algae in the long run you'll need to add plants, as these are algaes best combatants. They'll take in the nutrtients that the algea is using to grow so rapidly.
