I have a new tank coming soon, which will be intended for a male Siamese Fighter (Betta Splenden). Trying to create a natural environment .... or an environment that should be close to what they get in the wild. I know they come from paddy fields but I am not going to grow rice in the tank. Anyone with experience give me something to work too?

Thanks.

    :hyper: oh im sorry i didnt read it correctly i see it says "not going to grow rice", i was only trying to help :good:  :fun:

I've been interested in doing this myself, and I think the best approximation is a mixture of hair grass, to simulate the rice, and anubias (another thai native) for the betta to rest on or under. It might be a bit boring with just these two, but i'd like to see it first! I'd go with a dark, soil like substrate, medium level lighting, maybe some almond leaves or bogwood to add tannins for water colouring. Here's a link to a site I found while researching

What size tank will it be? I think a 20 gallon long would look amazing, and would really simulate quite accurately the long narrow channels in the rice paddies and small slow streams they come from.

It's an idea I have wanted to do for some time myself, but I haven't the space unfortunately.
