Always room for one more tank...
A week or two ago I added a male and female Nannacara anomola to my 125L community tank. I've not seen very much of them since I first added them - the female seemed fairly outgoing and would come to the front of the tank for the first couple of days, but I've barely seen her since. When I first got her she was quite bright orange. I was hoping to watch them as I added a pair of GBR's at the same time (who are both looking very healthy) and I was mindful that I might have to separate them, but I've seen no bickering.
This morning I saw her laying on the substrate at the front of the tank and she'd lost all her colour - as the photo's below show she is pretty much black. As I watched she seemed to lose her balance sideways and went on to her side as though there was a swim bladder issue, however when one of the corys came along and swam into her she managed to swim away to one of the hiding spots at the back of the tank. She's currently laying next to the heater there.
So far I've tested ammonia and nitrites and they are 0. I'll do nitrates in a minute but I'm not expecting much, and given that Nannacara anomola are as a rule hardier than GBR's and praecox rainbows (to mention to most sensitive tank mates) I don't think this is being caused by water chemistry. I have read that the females display a checkerboard pattern when in a breeding mood, but laying on the bottom of the tank (and the balance issue) seem a little unusual. I've taken some photo's, does anyone have any ideas? I've got a QT tank ready to isolate her if need be.
Oh, and I don't know if it's related but one of the hatchets added at the same time had a swim bladder issue last week and despite treating with a general antibacterial died.
