As I'd posted before, after coming home from a weekend vacation, I was surprised to find two fry in my quarantine tank.  Even more surprised for the fact that there were no fish in it when I left, nor had there been any for some time.  I assumed they were neon tetra fry (as that was the only species I could think of that might have laid or had eggs carry over from my display tank.

After watching them grow for a while, I'm beginning to question that assumption.

Their fin shapes are wrong for Neons, from what what I can tell.  I guess it's possible as they continue to mature their fins will alter, but they also seem to be getting an orange tint to their tails in excess of the red at the base of the tail the Neons have.  Has anyone bred Neons before and recorded their maturation?  These fry should be around 7-8 weeks old.

One more picture from under the full spectrum lighting of my planted sump-like tank.

I'm including this shot in Hi-Res to hopefully help with identification.  Under this lighting you can see some of the striking tail color and the fringing on the dorsal and anal fins.

They look a lot like rainbow fish to me I may be totally wrong but the coloring of the tail and that body shape really dose look a lot like the rainbow fry I've seen.

It can be difficult to positively identify fry, until they grow and colour up, but they certainly do look like one of the rainbowfish species (there are a lot of those, sadly!).

They're definitely not neon tetras though.

Do you own any Madagascar rainbow fish? Perhaps that could be it as they breed almost as easily as live bearers.

I don't. I'd been thinking about some sort of Killfish or Rainbow fish for these, but wasn't able to find any images in my books to match.   I don't own any rainbowfish at all.  At the time all I had were my neons, peppered cory and some ghost shrimp.

I'm trying to remember what else was in the tank at my LFS with the neon tetra.  I think they had some Danio mixed in but I can't remember what else.  I'll need to stop by and see.  Maybe something hitched a ride with the last few neons I had bought and took a while to hatch?

Are there any speciece of rainbow fish who's eggs can survive short-medium periods of drought?  I know there are some killfish that can.  Could they eggs have come in on a plant?  I may have gotten pest snails in my quaranteen tank around the same time.

Edit:
After some more research on rainbow fish, I came up with this as a frontrunner:

Dwarf Neon Rainbowfish

Plants were definitely the culprit. Some egg layers stick the eggs to the underside of leaves or they scatter them and they get stuck on leaves. I would say that's how they got there. Definitely looks like rainbowfish. Possibly some breed of danio as well.

Thank you all for the insight on these little guys.

The larger one has started to develop a lot of blue sheen.  I think they are greatly appreciating the 20 long.  I will try and post weekly pics in here as they continue to develop.

If they do turn out to be Dwarf Neon Rainbowfish, It looks like I'm going to need a few more to make a happy school (and it might be a good opportunity to convince my wife to let me set up the 30gal sitting in my basement right now).  If they are something bigger, I'll probably need to find them a better home.

A couple more weeks of growth, and these two are getting a lot bigger now they are in a 20g all to themselves.

Here's the largest:

He was fairly far back in the tank at the time, but this was the best shot I was able to get.  His blue is really coming in nicely, and the red has darkened  down quite a bit.
