ok, so i got some platys the other week, i noticed one was getting bigger, anyways lastnight before i went to bed, i looked at my tank, and noticed 1 of them suddenly looked to be bursting at the seems. i noticed a tiny tube like thing underneath the fish, so was obviously getting rdy to have its fry, it kept staying at bottom of tank with the male, i waited an hour till 1am and nothing, so turned lights off went to bed, got up this morning to the fish swimming around and no pregnant belly, still looks a little big but nothing like it did lastnight, so obviously i thought it had , had its fry during the night, but can i see any fry?? can i heck!! looked everywhere and there is NO fry in my tank. So question is what has happened? maybe it wasnt preggers and it had just eaten alot? or maybe it had the fry and theyve been eaten already? :( any advice would be welcome , thanks guys :good:

They've probably been eaten (what other fish do you have in the tank?) but they could be hiding; they're very, very good at hiding when they're new born!

Likelihood is they've been eaten... BUT... I can tell you I had one guppy go small over night (by about half) and NOT have her babies and then go ahead and have them 2 weeks later.

I'd say depends on what else is in the tank. I have two Balas and so we don't get a lot of fry surviving (and the one's that do are fast and smart), but I used to have a corner of my tank with thick plants in it and they could hide in there for days without me seeing them.

I've also had guppies thin down and then birth a day or so later. (never as long as two weeks)

Sorry i do apologise, should of put platys not guppies....
I've got a 180 litre Rio tank and in it i have:

2x Red Rainbows
6x Silver tip tetras
2x Dwarf Gouramis
2x small Angel fish
3x Red Platys ( 1Male & 2 Female)
10 x Cardinals Tetras (although think im down to 6, due to them being eaten when young)
1x Bristlenose Catfish
6x Guppies (4 Females & 2 Male)
2x Boesemans Rainbows

Thanks for the replies guys

Many years ago when I used to have live bearers (Platys, Swordtails and Mollies) the fry used to get eaten literally as they were emerging, especially by the angelfish that used to be in the same tank.

ok managed to get a couple of pics of 2 fish that are preggers (i think) new to this fish keeping lark,

Here is the 1st fish which is a guppy

Any ideas how far gone they are, the platy i only bought yesterday

The guppy, probably less than a week. Hard to tell with the platy from that angle, but she doesn't look like she has too long to go either.
