Mystery Snails

Ok so I have two of these guys and they do something really weird..

At times they will extend this weird hidden tentacle thing, and I'm wondering what are they doing? and what is this? I can't find research on it and was just curious. Sometimes it extends to the side and sometimes it reaches for the top of the tank

as far as i know, it's their way of smelling the water for food. it also allows them to breathe right from the surface of the water. I may be wrong though, as i've only ever had 2 of these guys, and that was several years ago.
