Hi ive just joined today.
My problem is a fish disease that flares up everytime i add new fish.Im sure the disease got introduced when i added some Conga Tetra`s 2 years ago. They have all died not straight away but when i have added new fish and it flared up again. I didnt add any fish for ages maybe a year and thought it had gone but sure enough it flared up when i added some Angels.I added 6 all togeather in 2`s but when i added the last 2 it started again and i have only 2 left. After adding a new fish it shows up 4/5 days later in other fish the signs are white blemishes on side of fish and also red thread like marks that look like veins just under the skin also rapid breathing. If anyone can shed some light on this problem it would be muched appreciated.
Cheers John P.

Internal bacterial infection brought on by weakened immune system did you check water chemistry after adding new fish to check if the filters were coping.

Stressed fish by toxins in the water can easily get weakened and then infections are able to take hold.

I'm not an expert but have it sounds like internal bacterial infection ive treated it before. Maybe get some anti bac med and do a course.

How many gallons or litres is the tank.
How many fish and which type.
Water stats in ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, and ph.

How long do you climatise the new fish for.
Always test ph and temp in bag water so you know how long to climatise for.

The red veins sounds like septicemia.
The white blemishes, how big were they. Did they have any redness or pinkness to the blemishes.
Were the blemished like bleaching beneath the skin, or fluffy like cotton wool.

Rapid breathing can be due to ph shock, bad water quality, stress, toxins, over dose of meds, parasites, bacterial, lack of aeration.

Thank you for your reply. My tank has been running for 8 years its a Juwel 350liter.I have changed the original internal filter for a external as i suspected it wasnt working as well.I done this 6 months ago and run both for 4 months this all seems ok.I do a 25% water change every 2 weeks with 75% RO water 25% treated tap water. The tank is set up for plants and grows them very well with co2 added.I only have 2 large Angels 3 Clown Loaches 4-6" 1 bristle nose a shoal of Ruby Noses about 15. 2 cardinals 3 sucking loaches,4 Cory`s and a male fighter that i added 2 weeks ago. Adding the fighter has`nt started the disease which im pleased about. I will test water but last time i took some to the shop and they said it was very good quality. When i add fish i leave bag in water then gradually add tank water over a hour or 2.I will test bag water from now on. I allways buy fish from the soft water range. The white blemishes did look a bit like cotton wool. The Clown Loaches have never suffered with this disease. The rapid breathing is only when the fish has the disease.

Thank you all for your replys John

Thank you for help

I would strongly suggest investing in some liquid test kits of your own. Ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, and ph.
For now take a sample of your water to the lfs and ask them to write the readings down for you.

When you preform a water change do you also preform a gravel vac.

It sounds bacterial but need also to rule out parasites.

Any signs of flicking and rubbing, darting, excess mucas on body or gills.

For now do a gravel vac, Remove ornaments so you can hoover under them.
Water change.
