went to clean my tank today and spotted a fry ....as it was being sucked up the tube no less. I did save it from the bucket and it seemed alright...but honestly i have NO idea where this one came from!

I have 3 platys...2 females and a male, 1 of the females is still too young to be breeding tho..the male completely ignores her. The other female well...I was thinking she MAY be pregnant the other day but I dont see a gravid spot on her and she certainly wasn't big enough to be having the babies yet even if she was pregnant.

In any case...Im not prepared for fry just yet. I have no tank set up or anything...I figured when I knew someone in there was pregnant, I'd start setting up their nursery! I had to tip the fry I found back into the community.

I also have 2 mollies...1 is definatley female, the other I THINK is male but neither of them are even chubby a BIT so I dont think it came from either of them.

Just baffled as to where this little buddy came from!

Well like you said your not prepared for fry yet but your fish are not gonna wait for you lol
if its not a platy fry its got to be the mollie .

I can only guess like you where it came from.

But for fry to survive in a tank with adults you need hiding places and food small enough for them. They can also live from decomposing left over food particles or from algae but a secure place to search for food is essential. This can be plants, ideally Java moss, or an appropriate decoration.

try looking at the colour, if it is transparent its a platy fry, if the colour is solid then its a molly

okay..he's transparent so its gotta be a platy.

as far as places to hide...I have quite a few I think. Under the sponge filter is a space, I have a shark with its mouth wide open, another snake/eel tunnel, plus a BIG hidey hole the female platy likes to sneak away too...plus I have about 5 fake plants in there. Hopefully thats enough. I also feed flake food...Tetramin flakes which are huge but I've been crushing them up pretty small and I do see some floating to the bottom before the bigger fish get them so hopefully that will keep the guy fed.
