I bought seven congo tetra five days ago and noticed one was avoiding the shoal,I put this down to stress but this morning it was dead. Now another has started to breathe quickly and avoid the rest.I am confused as the aquarium (360 litres) has been running for two years I have discus, pretty tetras, cardinals and rummynose that are all fine.Water parameters are fine and I wondered if it could be to do with bullying but am reluctant to buy more if they are going to die one by one. Please help.

Hi best to post threads like this in the emergency section of the forum.

How long did you climatise them, what was the ph of the store to your tank.
Can you post water stats in ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, and ph.
Check the gills over to see if there red and inflamed, or pale with excess mucas on them.
Do the fish also look pale.

The one that is gasping seems to look red inside its mouth but the others are healthy I took time to acclimatise them from the shop ph is 6.5 there is no nitrite and minimal nitrate I carry out water changes weekly and all other fish are really healthy, temperature is slightly higher for my discus but then if that was the problem why are the other congos ok?

Fish can get sores in there mouths.
Is the mouth just red inside or does it look like a sore.
Does the fish swim around the tank with its mouth wide open.

If he's laboured breathing he dosn't sound like he's going to make it.
Get you some info.
I know its a goldifsh site but take a read and see what you think.
Though it would be hard to swab a mouth on a small tetra which most of the sites tell you too.
