Myriophyllum Pinnatum Care Question

I have both red and green myriophyllum pinnatum or red and green fox tail. They are growing fine but seems that it has some algae growth on it. I cut away the parts that were really bad and as for the rest I have been "combing" with a gravel rake. Is it just normal for this on the fox tail because of its fine leafs or is there something wrong with mine. Also this is the only plant with algae and the combing seems to be working fine.
