I recently upgraded the lighting on my 29g tank and got some more plants. Now, the plants I have are:
anarcharis (egeria densa)
LOTS of java moss
some crypts
amazon swords
anubius
red tiger lotus
dwarf sublata
vallis (i forget what kind)
and
Alternanthera reineckii
Most seem to be doing well.
The red tiger lotus has grown over one foot in 2 weeks. It started with two leaves about 4 inches tall and a week later it had 4 leaves, and was 8 inches, another week, 5 leaves, 12 inches. Now it's about 18 inches (third week) and has 6 leaves. Awesome plant!
The java moss grows fast and dense, a hiding place for all the baby platy...
Crypts are doing okay, nothing bad, nothing extraordinary.
Swords are very healthy. One is about 6 inches diameter, the other is about 4inches. Both about 5 inches tall.
anubias is fine, it's grown a few leaves, looks healthy.
dwarf sublata didn't look too good at first but now it's filled in a little and looks nice.
Vallis is okay, it looked bad at first because it didn't take the shipping too well, but now it's growing a little.
Alternanthera reineckii is where the algae problem is. On the topmost leaves, the ones 6 inches or less from the surface, there's lots of hair algae. This appeared after about two days. I thought it would go away but it's not and the algae is getting long, about three quarters of an inch. I tested my water and I'm pretty sure the problem is high nitrates because I skipped my last water change. Today I did a large water change (50%) and I'll see how it goes, but I'm going to the pet store tomarrow, would anyone suggest some fish or shrimp for it? I was thinking of getting some otos, will they eat the algae? I know if I h ave high nitrates I shouldn't really be getting fish, but it was a huge amount of 1/2 inch platies (27) that had to stay there for a week. They're gone now, though. So what should I do to combat the algae?
The lighting is 40 or 45watts(can't remember) and no CO2. I occasionally add flourish excel, but that's all. Substrate is sand. There's no algae anywhere but on the Alternanthera reineckii.
