Here are a couple more shots taken during feeding time. Sorry about the dirty tank.

Still working on the filtration. :X

Nope. It's the flash that's built into the camera (Canon 20D)

Niceee... How much did that baby set you back?
Great set of pics' too! :D
I have some other questions if you don't mind. How do planted refugiums work? What are their advantages? Are the plants (fast growing stem plants) supposed to reduce nitrates?
How do the plants cope with the extra water in the system when its only getting a certain amout of light, but more nutrients?

Cheers,

what lighting do you use? im looking to get away from my fluorescent strip on my aquarium

Hi Matty. I'm using T5 fluorescent fixtures each having 2x24W 6500K bulbs.

The concept is similar to the practice of growing and harvesting fast-growing algae in a marine setup. I hope the plants in my case soak up nitrate and dissolved organic carbon, increasing water quality. How well this is actually working is anyone's guess, but I suppose it helps.

Thanks again for looking, everyone.

I think your tank is so very nice. I'm going to be copying it to some extent (fish anyway). You know what they say? “Imitation is the greatest form of flattery”. I have a Rio 180 arriving next week and I’m going to start putting things together. Your stocking list that you have on your first post, can I just ask you to outline the male/female ratios that you have for each of the species.

Current inhabitants:
11 Tropheus sp. black Kiriza
5 Syn. multipunctatus
4 M. estherae OB
6 Ps. zebra Mdoka long pelvic
5 Ps. demasoni
4 L. caerulus
5 Ps. saulosi
2 Ps. elongatus Chewere

I know that I’m not going to get the same stocking density that you have, but of the fish that I do get I want to get the balance right. Plus which of the species that you have would you recommend for a smaller setup.

Tanks a lot, Tanks A Lot. :D

Here is my updated stock list. The M/F ratios are not ideal, but I haven't had any problems with aggression:

1 Tropheus sp. black Kiriza, unsexed
5 Syn. multipunctatus
2 M. estherae OB, 1M 1F
6 Ps. zebra Mdoka long pelvic, 2M 4F
3 Ps. demasoni, 2M 1F
3 L. caerulus, 1M 2F
1 Ps. saulosi, 1F
2 Ps. elongatus Chewere, 1M 1F
3 G. acei, 2M 1F
1 Mel. cyaneorhabdos, unsexed
1 Alto. compressiceps, unsexed
1 N. leleupi, unsexed
1 x Chal. brichardi, unsexed
2 x Jul. dickfeldi midnight, unsexed
5 x Cyp. leptosoma Mpulungu, 1M 4F

What kinds of cichlids do you plan to keep?

What kinds of cichlids do you plan to keep?

I am planning on keeping lake malawi cichlids

The list i've been working on so far goes (based on what my LFS has to offer) as follows,

4 * Labidochromis caeruleus (kakusa) 1M 3F
3 * Aulonocara maylandi 1M 2F
3 * Cynotilapia afra (cobue) 1M 2F or 3 * Pseudotropheus sp "elongatus yellowtail" 1M 2F

My idea behind this list is to try and keep the minimum size and aggression down. I would prefer to have smaller fish and variety in colour.

Do you think that this list looks ok?

Thanks for the input so far.
