I wonder if someone could help.

I have a rena filter (smallest one) in my tank that is evil. I have had my tank set up for nearly a year now and all is well on the Ammonia / Nitrite / Nitrate and Ph front however my biggest enemy seems to be my pump.

The pump is attached to the inside of the glass with black suckers. The pump is made up of a sponge filter and then it has a separate chamber for the carbon filter.

I have neon tetra's and danios in my tank and unfortunatly they keep getting stuck behind the pump. I have put my fingers on the back of the pump and where the separate sections click together there is some suction from small gaps (nothing I can do it is the pump design). It appears that the small fish are getting sucked against the back of the pump and dying.

I have lost 5 now. My solution was to stick tape all over the back of the pump to stop the suction which has worked for the past six months but it is a nightmare because I have to un tape it all to clean the pump.

Yesterday I lost two danio's found stuck behind the pump again in the only part that I can't tape.
My fish are healthy so have not just floated there.

Has anyone else suffered the same problem with their filter? I can't adjust the speed of the pump so I am at a loss. I removed the pump from the tank altogether this morning becasue I can't stand to see my poor fishes lives ended by this stupid pump.

I am reluctant to move to under gravel filtration as my tank is set up and I don't want to discturb it too much. Is there anything anyone can suggest or has anyone else had the same problem.

thanks,

Kirsty

what about a different internal filter? like a fluval 1. they arent very strong but do a good job. hand the media from the old one in a pair of tights in the water while you run it in.

It sounds like the internal Juwel filters, they are renowned for trapping little fish aswell. First thing i did was remove it and replace it with an external.

we had an internal that did it to a couple of our corys we got rid of it after the second time and got a nice new one....

i`d recomend the fluval internals

Thanks all.

This morning all is well and we have not lost anymore of the little guys.

Off to get a new pump tonight M62 permitting. I sat on that motorway for 2.5 hours last night!

What are the external filters like? I have always gone for the internal ones so have no idea how they work?

thanks

Kirsty
