Hello i just recently bought two red wagtail platies, one male and one female. I've read a lot that the female is usually bigger than the male, mine is smaller. My male's fins are jet black and my females you can see through the ends. I had a couple of questions:

1) is my female fairly young
2) is she two young to breed

thanks in advance!

im cant answer those questions but im sure someone else can. but are they the only platies you have? because you should have one male to two to three female otherwise she will be harrased.

:hi: to tff m8.

Thanks, those are the only two i plan to get another female or two soon though... but while i look at them the female chases the male

She will grow I'm sure as yes the generally larger, so u answered ur own question rearly, they will just be different ages.

They can start breeding from 8 weeks of age so no she will not be to young.

when i got my platies my male was bigger than the female, still is, the only way to know for sure is to look at this :good:

howtosexalivebearer.jpg

Female:
RED: shows the gravid spot, this is where the fry develop inside mum.
PURPLE: shows the female’s anal fin, notice the shape, very ‘fan’ shaped.

Male:
BLUE: shows the gonopodium (male sex organ) notice the shape is small and pointed.

Its the same for most livebearers
