So last Thursday my platy started giving birth. I only actually saw 3 fry throughout the evening. By morning, no more sightings, except for one somewhat gross chunk floating around ... so I would assume they were eaten. I guess even with all the hiding places I set up for them, a breeder net is necessary in a 10 gallon.

There's a weird aspect to all this though ... the mother platy is still big, she still has a small gravid spot (or what looks like it to me), and she's still got a somewhat square belly. At first I thought she would just take a day or so to finish giving birth, but since Thursday evening nothing else has happened. Could she still be pregnant but the rest aren't ready to come out yet?? I'm confused by this ...

Has anyone heard of other situations like this one? I could try and take a picture if it helps ...

Is your mama fish swimming and eating normally?

some of my guppies still look large after they've dropped their babies........not sure why .....and yep......a photo would certainly help :D . I have a lot of plants both planted and floating in my tanks and that certainly helps the survival rate of the babies.

sue :D

I will explain what happened recently with our platty, her first batch of platty fry were all eaten (unfortunetly I didn't have a breeder trap so I shot down the LFS as soon as I noticed, by that time it was to late)

That was her first batch, she was still big etc afterwards, around 30days or so later she gave birth to more fry (2nd batch), this time i was a bit more prepared, but again she lost a lot of fry (gave birth at night) I managed to rescue 2 fry from unknown amount and placed them into a breeder trap. I dont like putting full grown size preg fish into the breeder itself, as I believe it stresses the fish to much

hope this helps
