Bet these same sorts of newb questions come up daily so sorry to be a pain.

Im just reading up before i start my own tropical fish tank.

Im going to get a tank 140x30x40 Cm (LHW) about 33/40 Gal (UK/US), Im looking to stock:

10 x Neon Terras
4 x Dwarf Otto cat
5 x Clown Barb
1 x Red Rainbow Shark ( thinking one on its own should be okay)

Does this mix of fish seem okay ? I would have liked some Clown Loachs but i think they would have been to big for the tank size.

Considering the large surface are of the tank do you think any more fish could be stocked ?

This sounds like a very good stock list. I might add 2-3 barbs or 4-5 neons. Another good option to take is to leave everything as is, since understocking fish means less maintenance for you and more time to watch the fish! I would keep an eye on the shark to make sure it doesn't show aggression. I dont think that will be an issue, as long as you have a cave or other hiding spot for it to center its territory around and hide in if it ever feels threatened or frightened. The only real possibilty for a problem will be between the shark and the otos, but I doubt it. You should feel good about asking others if you are unsure, since it allows you to gain knowledge and keep your fish healthy!   B)

Thanks for the advice alabaster,Im goning to put the barbs in first i think as they should be the hardiest of the lot. All i need to do now is sort out my planting and get it all on order.

I had a Red Tail Black Shark that got very aggressive towards my other fish, even with a lot of hiding places. He was the biggest fish in the tank and I know that had a lot to do with it. I had to take him out because he was chasing my Platies and stressing them out. I got him thinking he wouldnt be aggressive. Ive also heard they get even more territorial and aggressive as they get bigger. Just an FYI...

From what i have been reading on the RTB/rainbow Sharks some seem to be little terros while some are passive. I love the look of them so im gonna just go for it and hope for the best.

The large lenght of the tank should calm the little devil down, i hope :/

You might try explaining the situation to the pet store before you buy the shark and asking if you could return it if it gets too aggressive...

If you put him with equally aggressive and sized fish, then he wont be a problem. But, most everyone Ive talked to about them is that they are kinda quiet and peaceful when young, but as they grow, they get meaner and meaner. Good Luck

EDIT: Like Alabaster said, If you can find a LFS that trades with you, then you could try it. The LFS I go to traded with me on both my gouramis and Red Tail Shark. I have also heard that Rainbow Sharks are less aggressive as well. Let me know how it works out
