woke up this morning and my platy juliet/ jules was dead on the bottom of the tank. i was in the hospital ALL of last week so my mom cared for my fish and since i got home jules has looked "off." anyway my mom did everything i told her to and i did a water change right before i left. but jules diead and i found her on bottom of tank this morning.

Jules was never my most active fish she tended to stay by herself and the male platy dinozzo (who has ADHD i think) recently fell for jules and started following her everywhere. she seemed to tolerate it most of the time so i didnt worry about it... plus dinnozo would give her time to herself often enough. Last few says she did not come to the surface to eat she waited for bella to knock some of the flakes down to the bottom. last week before i left she was comingto surface to eat and moving a ton but the last few days she moved only a very little.

i examined her this morning after i took her body form the tank and she looked fine. absolutley no discoleration on the scales or body, and her fins were 100% fine. the other fish are okay, i dont see any white spots or anything... any ideas as to what happened to jules?

She may have been old. You say she wasn't active and tended to stay by herself, and that if exactly what my older platys and swordtails did before they died. I found my panda platy dead this morning. She was acting reclusive and wasn't being active. Even seemed to have a little trouble moving. I know she was an old girl though.

Just out of interest, how long do platies live?

Platys can lived 1-2 years and its not unheard of for a platy to push on 3 years. My oldest platy which I still have I got Two years ago (One of my first fish) I figure hes around 2years and a few months but he himself has been getting slugish so he may be near the end of his life. So overall the average would be 2years, At least this is what I find.

I'm sorry about your platy! Could she have given birth recently? One of my female platy died a few days after giving birth. She too was hiding mostly, her abdominal area was kind of pinkish red!

thanks guys it may very well have been age.. although i think she may have given birth a few days ago.. i saw it but i didnt know quite what i was seeing...

Well no matter waht happened, I am sorry for your loss. What were your water parameters? Ammonia level, Nitrite level and such?
