Right guys, i have a Juwel Rio 180 litre tank with the standard lights. which is two bulbs running at 30w each. So its about 1.3W per gallon. I know this is pretty low which may be the reason why im having no luck at all with plants, ive tried adding a small co2 system but it did nothing. Ive come to the conclusion i will need to spend some money on another bulb and a proper co2 system.

Can anyone give some good suggestions on what would be ideal to have a perfect planted tank?

Thanks

I put a third tube into my Rio 180, and my plants grow well. I also use CO2, and EI (loads of stuff on this on the forum).

You didn't say what plants you were trying to grow or if you were using ferts, type of substrate etc. etc. Before spending any money on new equipment etc. I suggest you do a search on low tech setups and low light plants and go from there. Do a bit of research, then see what new equipment, liquid ferts, root tabs, Co2, substrate etc. you need before you spend the money. There is a whole forum over on the planted tank here dedicated to low tech setups and check out plantgeek as it lists plants in order of difficulty and light requirements. While I don't profess to having a tank anywhere near as good as some of the setups on here, I've had reasonable success with crypts, swords, hairgrass, sags, hygrophila, wisteria, vallis etc. Okay, some folks on here would consider them to be 'weeds' but I don't have the time to invest in a full on Co2 high tech setup. It does me fine.
