OK, my latest brainwave is to divide my latest arrival, a 10g tank for 3 bettas. We're going to use doc holders, then slide in craft plastic canvas.. The plan is to have it filtered. We'll put 3 dividers in, one of the dividers will go butt up to the filter leaving a gap of around 4 inches at one end, I'll also put a heater in the same gap. So that section will have the filter and the heater, but no betta. The point of this is firstly to contain the current from the filter, and also so when we syphon out water for the water changes, the hose can go into this little section and not bother the fish so much. I can stir up the sand a little before I start... bettas seem to be so clean when it comes to poo. :good:

Ok, that leaves 16" (in length) to divide into 3 sections for 3 bettas. Giving a little over 2.5g each, which I think is nice. Anyways, my question is about the filtering and heating.. Would I need a heater at each end to heat the tank properly? and... will a filter at one end be enough to filter the whole tank, considering the canvas divides, or would I be better scrapping the whole idea, dividing the tank into 3 and having small sponge box type filters in each bettas section?

Thanks!

hmmm....I think that one heater might be adequate if the water is circulated well enough in the tank. The only thing that I wonder about is if the filter would filtrate the water on the far side of the tank...But it sounds like a really good idea to me. I use large sponge filters (30 g) and use valve switches with an airstone in each section for my bettas. I also get the gravel in all sections. I take out the dividers, move the bettas to cups for a few moments, and vacuum the bottom. Food waste and plant material get on the bottom of my tank and I'm rather anal about how clean the substrate is. I also have some tanks that are bare with some potted plants. I'm glad I did that because I now realize how much waste actually goes to the bottom. LOL. :fun:

I would be willing to bet that perhaps doing the box filters for each section might be better though, because then the sections are getting really good filtration on its each little system. You could make the bubble flow nice and light for the males and their nests if you like and they'd still get filtration I'd imagine.

Nice idea! I think it's worth a shot...just do one heater though...that should be plenty if the water is circulating well enough. I would think that if the tank didn't heat properly with that plan of system, then the water isn't getting filtrated well enough either.

Thanks for the advice. I think I'm going to divide into 4 instead with one heater and a small box filter in each section, powered by an air pump. That also means I can have 4 bettas, which is, well, better. :)

Thanks!

i divided a ten galon 3 times and it works ok. let me see if i can get pics. u used pvc pipe to bring the filter intake to the other side of the tank. and it worked! so the water is completely circulated 5 times an hour. witch the bettas like. let me get a picture ill show u\

Thanks, that'd be great :)

here it is...

i used silicone to divide a 10 gallon with acrylic cut out pieces. and pvc piping to extend the filer intake to the opposite side of the tank and sliced holes in the acrylic to make the water circulate top and bottom. graves was used to keep the fish from swiming under the pvc pipe.

it worked well for about 4 months now but something is cloggin the filter intake now so i have to redo everything and find out.

might be worth a shot if you fix the filter problem i have.

I wouldn't divide the tank more then three times as it leaves little room for your bettas. I am actaully going to divide my 10 gallon three ways so that three of my bettas can go in there. But I am using plexi glass instead. Or a store bought divider :fun:

Godd luck with your tank but don't divide it to much. Remember bettas prefer to have more room side-to-side rather then up and down.

Thanks, it looks great! Did you find that the filtration was evenly spread throughout the tank? How long is that tank?

Oh the oh-so-painful choice between lots of bettas and fewer happy bettas. *sigh* I guess it is going to be divided 3 ways. lol!!

ITS A 10 GALLON SO 20 INCHES LONG I THINK the bettas each have 2.5 gallons. but thats just room, they stay happy inthere. 2.5 is more than i keep my other bettas. and yes the water is filtered evenly. there is a flow to it cause i cut out holes so the water circulates. and it even acts as a protein skimmer because the intake is at water level. not under it.
