cant believe how much thick white dust has come off the sand, thought it was the slate at first but definately from the sand. my glass and heater are covered, im gonna keep filling and emptying with water till its clear.
The amount is fine. Id also have it off the glass so they swim through and around. I also preferred your first pile as it looks less stacked on top of each other and more random.

i changed it literally about an hour after those pics lol, have it in the middle now so they can swim through
i agree the first looked best but the way the rocks were angled didnt leave much room at all, i have tried to make it look as natural as possible whilst having enough swimming room and holes to swim through. will post more pics when i have my filter and fish next week
im just a little worried at how sharp some of the slate is now
If it was me with the slate instead of stacking it up id try build caves and bury a few pieces on a angle. Have a few pieces of slate pointing upwards then sit another piece on top to make a cave if that makes sense or have a few stacked and a few caves. Will give the males a good territory to start digging and claiming it as there own (depending if there is females in the tank)
