I went a long period without feeding them feeder fish(3 months atleast) due to the tank was too small and i didnt want them to grow super super fast, and it seemed like feeder fish made them grow the fastest.

Now, i have a bigger tank, put 4 feeder fish in and only my big guy ate ONE, this is over the course of several hours, whats the deal? they just chased them around but never really ate them, they were very unimpressed and uninterested in eating feeders.

Did i make them lose their killer instinct?

Feeder fish really aren't a good thing to be feeding oscars in the first place.

It's better that you don't feed them feeders.

Should i just stick to the pellets then?

Everyone has an opinion, alot of people feed them feeders, alot don't.

Feeders like goldfish and minnows, are not healthy for other fish to eat, and that is not based on opinion. These fish aren't nutritious and lack in a lot of different vitamins fish need in a proper diet. They can also carry different diseases. I recommend a mixture of dried and frozen foods, with the occasional liver bearer or two (Guppy, Platy, Molly, ect.)

Live earthworms from your garden are good for them.Frozen foods like bloodworm and glassworm are also good occasionally.I feed my oscar guppies everyonce in a while. No harm done, but I do it because i have nowhere else for them!

Earthworms can be harmful to the fish. Don't feed them if you our your neighbors, spray the area with any kind of insecticide.

Buy your earthworms from an angling shop to be sure they are free from pesticides this is great food for oscars and they will take them eagerly and also feed them Hikari oscar cichlid pellets. Beefheart mix now and then as a treat. Feeder fish don't provide oscars with the right nutrients and it is a bad practice in any case.

Get them from your back garden, somewhere where you know there won't be pesticides. My discus and other cichlis love them as a treat.

I think I read that Oscars do not really ever eat fish in the wild anyways. They are too big and slow to eat them unless they are enclosed in an aquarium with them.

Bad advice. Earthworms do travel. And, if they go from yard to yard, who knows what they are carrying...

if the worm was soaked in pesticide it might die perhaps. although they are not insects, the chemicals in the pesticides i have seen are strong. obviously give the worms a very good wash. looking from his experience, his fish are alive and therefore it seems okay atm.

Oh well i still do it.Earthworms clear their systems all the time.
