Do you think I should seperate my oscars 4in and my mbu puffer also 4in. They co exist quite happily in their 400L home except that yesterday an oscar recieved a nasty bite to the face when he tried to retrieve some cockel that the puffer had halfway into its mouth.

They are non agressive toward each other its just the oscars can't learn to stay away from the jaws when feeding.

If you suggest seperation it will mean oscars going back to the lfs as my second tank is as yet unpurchased.....

As they are still quite small maybe placing a divider in might help short term.
How long before you can get another tank?
I believe the puffer will require a 50 gallon tank and the oscar a 75 in the long run, seperately.

I thought you said oscar not oscars. I take it theres two oscars then? If thats the case then you will eventiually need more than 75 gallons for both oscars.

Mbu, 50g!? Will need a lot bigger than that. A 2' puffer will need a tank at least 7'x4'x3' IMO.

i thought 1 oscar is ok in a 50g on its own and i pair can live happily in a 75g with good filtration.

At the very least but for happy fish then prob 75G for a single and 120G+ for a pair. Also, by pair, means a breeding pair that won't fight eachother for territory. If they are not a breeding pair then atleast 180G plus to stem some of the aggression but this might not even be enough space when full grown
