Picked up a pair of these yesterday to go in my archer tank. They're really interesting fish, just wondered if anyone had an experience of them eating plants? I really want to plant my brackish tank, but obviously I don't want these guys tearing out the plants!

I think I read in an article by Neale Monks that Green Chromides will eat plants and vegetation in an aquarium. They grow quite large and as Cichlids, I imagine they could potentially be quite destructive to a planted tank. Not sure though, so don't quote me on that! :)

Green chromides are absolutely lovely fish, and completely peaceful and in fact like to be kept in groups. . They do not dig. But they are herbivores, and while sturdy plants like Java fern and giant Vallisneria will probably be fine, they'll demolish Cabomba and the like. You'd do well to give them algae-rich flake food rather than standard cichlid pellets, and certainly offering them stuff like tinned peas, spinach, and blanced lettuce will be appreciated.

Cheers,

Neale
