Hi all. Quite pleased with myself and thought I'd share a photo or two of my new tank. It's actually second hand, but new and exciting to me. It's also a bit of an experiment using Moler clay as a substrate (similar to akadama clay and often used as cat litter). As my first proper tank (last one was a tiny 30 litre tank), I'm hoping to create a little South American biotope. Plants should grow (hopefully) to create some dense hiding places and more fish will be added. Hope you like the pics.

Ooooh, I love your tree stump!

I know. It's amazing isn't it. I was complaining at my LFS guy about how I couldn't find a decent piece of bogwood anywhere. He asked me what exactly I was looking for and I said tree roots. His little eyes lit up. Turned out one of the LFS guys had just decided to let this go a few days before. He hadn't even had chance to bring it into the shop. It cost a few quid, but so worth it. I suppose it goes to show that it pays to ask. :)

That wood is truly amazing I want it!!!! Let me borrow your house keys for 10 minutes ;)

Hahaha! My last nice piece of bogwood I got half price 'cos it had already been used in one of the LFS display tanks; they nick all the best pieces before we get a look in! (*wanders off grumbling* ;) )

WOW! I wanted some bogwood like that! Great tank set-up! :good:

Fan-freaking-tastic! I love the wood!

My husband is out right now scouring the shores of Lake Superior looking for some driftwood for my tanks.

As said above, the wood is great. Wonder what your tank would look like with a black background. Think the plants would show up nicely.

Agreed; plain backgrounds are far, far nicer and show up the fish (and plants) much better than those photographic ones :)

Thanks for all your positive comments. I'm glad you guys like it too. I'd have been gutted if you didn't! lol

Not sure about a plain background. Although I have one spare, I've never known anyone use one (in my circle of friends and family). In fact, the first time I came across the idea was when I started using this forum. My intention is to almost cover the back of the tank with plants anyway, so I'm not sure it'll even matter, but I do like the illusion of depth provided by the current photographic image. Suppose it wouldn't hurt to try a black background since I have one though.

At the moment the tank has 10 neons and 7 rummy nose tetra in it. I have two sterbai cory to yank from my old tank, but they are proving hard to catch. As I'm hoping the concentrate on South American fish, would anyone like to suggest ideas for stocking? My preference is for smaller fish that shoal, but I feel something pretty is required to add interest. I had a lovely apistogramma caetei (caete dwarf cichlid) a few months back that I sadly lost to a prolonged power cut. I really liked him and would love something along those lines. What ever I get, it's got to be affordable and easy to care for as I'm still very new as a fishkeeper.
