ok i wanna get a 55 gal tank for chrismas and im starting to
plan things out now on what to stock it with.

I wanna get like 3 Angel fish for sure.
2. a smallish shoaling fish like danios
3. bunch or cories (assorted)
4. some kind of loach
5. bristle nose plec
6. group of black skirts, long finned, albino, all mixed up
like 6 or so total.
7. Some male and femle swords (right ratio of course) FREE LIVE FOOD
(not to be cruel or anything but there will be plently of hiding for em)
8. I doubt it but would a male betta go ok with the angels?
IS THIS OVER STOCKED ALREADY?
Does this sound ok so far im sure i will some things will change but
do any of u guys sugest anything less that would go good in there?

O and any other setups even if there completly differnt would be appreciated

technically, 'overstocking' is quite hard to come across in a good tank, whether it be old or new. as myself and my dad have told each other many times, "Screw the 1" rule."

if you have more filtration (hang-on power filter and undergravel) more gravel (say, 3-4" instead of 1-2") a lot of live plants (the equivalent would be one Vallisnera Gigantea per 1" of fish) and something where bacteria could cling (lava rock, driftwood, etc) you greatly increase your stocking capabilities. why? because you're introducing more good things. the lava rock, extra filtration and gravel introduce more bacteria, while the more plants there are the more Nitrate is sucked up by them!

technically, my tank is way overstocked and the parameters are still 0. i have six Kuhliis (3" each) and six Platties (2" each) in the tank, that is well over 10" of fish!

alright, now we get to your list =)

55g

4 Angels - spotlight; pairing fish
6 Platties - schooler; produces live food
12 Black Neons - schooler; active and colorful
6 Cories (Peppered, Albino, Jewelled & Bronze) - bottomfeeder; clownlike vacuums
6 Kuhliis - bottomfeeder; spazzy vacuums

Well for your loach I gotta go with a Dojo (Weather loach) I 've got two and am going to get 1 more for a ten gallon I am setting up for fry. The only thing I can tell you from personal experience is that "Angel" fish are that by name only. I had one named "Spawn" who went after everything in my 55 Gallon but they are pretty. Now I have a Molly that picks on everything except the Jack Dempsey I have.

New tanks are great fun to get ready and stock

Good Luck

Hi while its somewhat true what you are saying, the main reason for not overstocking is oxygen levels. All your water parameters could be at oppm as you said but going over 1 inch of fish is putting extra oxygen demands on the system. Thats why surface area is more important than volume, ie; a hex tank with the same volume as a rectangle tank cant hold half as many fish because of the greatly decreased surface area. Oxygen demand is greatly increased with the size of the fish too. For example one 6 inch fish will consume more oxygen than 3 x 2 inch fish.

YES your tank would be over stocked, keep the angels, cories, bristlenose pelco, and the swordtails. ditch the rest. angels can grow to be pretty big. and I have seen some that would be better suited to a 75 gallon tank.here aer some good sites to look at other cichlids, how ever I warn you that once you go down this road you won't be able to turn around hahahahaha

now of course these people are all in the US so if you are from any where else well out of luck my friend but these sites at the same time will give you more ideas about fish to research for your tank.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but don't weather loaches grow to 8 inches or more? In other words, much too big for a 10 gal?

ok ive changed up my plans and scratched the angels
1. 15 neons
2. 4 sword tails (1 male 3 females)
3. 3 red eye tetras
4. 1 bristle nose
5. shoal of cories
6. Ghost shrimp
7. Small loach like Kulies
8. a Apple snail
9. ANY MORE ROOM?

Also would this tank be compatible with a BETTA?
