They are the cutest! I can't wait til they have babies!!!

What traits are hereditary with swords and especially lyretail high tail swords like mine? I hadn't seen them anywhere and picked up these two as quick as I saw them... They're in quarantine right now

Also the wire that looks like it's in the tank is not! It's not plugged in either, I just didnt have a chance to move it while trying to get a good shot of these sneaky little guys (and gals)

The lyretail trait is strange in swordtails is a rare gene but it's dominate. When back crossing (between the family).

But watch u need to watch is the males which develop long gonopodiums (anal fin) are impossible to breed from, you need a fish which is from the same gean pool, but dose not display the long gonopodium, to back cross with.

If you cross them with other swords lines then it may take a very long time to get the lyretail gene back to show.

But their loverly fish and keep us infprmed with how their going.

Ok so forgive my silliness but from what you're saying I take it as when these two breed I need to look out for the one's with the long anal fins and cull those?

Im just trying to realize If this pair will produce offspring close to or similar.

Your male breeding tool (gonopodium) looks good ;) (OMG did i rearly just say that).

In some male's it's grossly over developed and impossible to breed from, but they look stunning.
No need to cull as they look good but they just will not breed as long as u have a normale fish to breed with your be fine.

Thanks a lot for the help and information... the only breeding I've ever done is with guppies and those little guys will breed like rabbits. I will definately be sure to send the long tool'd one's to the fish store for a little credit :shifty: assuming they breed, but these were both in the tank at the store so I'm guessing she's been "hit" so to speak.
