Hey all just picked up 4 plty's, they are all an bright orangey colour, 3 females and 1 male.

Anyone got any good info on them, how promiscuos are they? how long gestation? friendly with mollies and corys? eat their own fry? etc etc

thanks everyone

they are as bad as guppies  gestation is between 4-5 weeks, will breed in good water conditions, under stress females will not produce any eggs until settled. young females drop anything between 3-10 fry and when older upto 80, their first fry drop if young unsually goes un unoticed but after that pregnancy is quite obvious, dont overfeed them as they bloat very quickly and this can be mistaken as pregnancy, some have gravid spots but the darker the colour the less gravid is apparent, they will eat thier fry but only if hungry so provide loads of plants etc for the fry to hide in, ideal food is crushed flake and live food, bloodworm, brine shrimp etc once a week this helps the emale produce good amounts of eggs and healthy fry.

friendly community tank fish with everything, might try to mate with the mollies and viceversa but will not produce fry.

dont be surprised if the male is more active than the females as this is normal.

I know you have the right ratio but if for intense you had all males they play very roughly but never harm eachother and females tend to keep themselves to themselves.

good luck with your new fish

Thankyou very much, on closer inspection new lad at lfs has given me 2 of each sex rather than 3 of female and 1 male which I wanted, will 2 of each be ok?

They sound very much the same as my mollies to care for, and im sure I can almost see tiny eyes through the fattest females tum?

Thanks again
Stu

you need a couple more females.

1 to 2 ratio has worked fine for me many many times unless your tank is too small, lacking hiding spots or you have a really randy male. If you add too many more females you'll have more fry than you can handle. Our swordtail platies dual-dropped and we ended up with 30 + fry we weren't really ready for.

lol what a nightmare that will be just my luck!! im hoping for more dalmation mollies tbh and eventually id like to try offering any fry big enough to my lfs in exchange for other fish, dunno if they will do it but I think its a good idea

You'll probably never get same dollar value for your fry, but if you have a LFS that will take the fry for any amount of credit, that's a great thing.

yeah im not after money value, literally just credit so that when my 150 litre tank is running I can stock it kinda on the free side lol

that wa what I wanted but they actually gave me 2 of each so im going back there today to sort it out, my mollies were 3 to 1 until elvis the male passed on yesterday so i now need a male molly and 2 more female platy!!
