HI everyone,
Another newbie question. I have a 55 gallon tank and I have just put 7 guppies and a shoal of 15 neon tetra in it. Well one of my female Gupppies was pregnant and had six babies. I am not planning on breeding so I did not separate the babies, just figuring the other fish would eat them  . Well, to my surprise, they have lived 2 days and 2 nights. My question is, if my Guppies are breeding and a lot of the babies survive, will they eventually overstock my tank? Also, do you think I can contact my LFS and see if they would like some of the babies? Maybe they can sell them?

Thank you for any help.

Eventually your guppies could breed enough to over stock your tank, but if your LFS will take them you should be fine? Usually after a few days the babies are fast enough not to get eaten, and yes some LFS will buy guppies and a few won't but it never hurts to ask

Definately will get overstocked if they continue to produce fry no doubt about it... but yup your LFS will probably take them off ya hands :)

Good luck.

Ok, thanx for the replies. I will give the lil babies a couple more days and if they are still swimming around in there I will call my LFS and see if they want them. Atleast it will give me an excuse to go up there. I love walking around and looking at all the fish...

I knew they would breed I just assumed (dumb of me) that the fry would be eaten by the other fish. I never thought they would survive. They sure are cute tho..

Get a Betta to put in there, he will certainly keep the numbers down. The LFS probably won't take the babies until they are a certain age, better check with them first. Congrats on the fry!!! Don't forget to take some pictures!!! :snap:

Most fish stores will take them off your hands and some will even give you a credit for them

im in the same boat, but getting another tank to house the males from the females.how old do the guppies need to be before they can be sexed,as of now (some 1 week old) they all look like females

Yeah, a LFS around here as a fry tank... just drop your fry in, maybe get a few bucks if you have a ton of them, and they sell the fry for pennies. Its a cool tank though, getting to see all the tiny little guppy and molly and whatever fry swim around.

My LFS takes my fry but doesn't give me anything for them. The other thing I do is put an ad on Craiglist for "Free to a good home." My babies are usually gone within a day or two. The only thing about the ad is they cannot go until a certain size. There is the possibility of a betta or gourami.....they love babies

Thanx so much guys, I can't believe it but all six of them are still alive and swimming in my tank. :good: Im going to give them a few more days and will call my LFS and see if they take babies... I like the Craigslist idea too. Will check that out if LFS can't use... :)
