The betta I got yesterday a beautiful dark red with black shading is building a bubble nest in the 2 liter bowl I have kept it in along with some gravel and a fake plant, why is it doing this? secondly the nest now seems to be breaking up, also the bowl is surrounded by fake plants outside it which were giving it cover in the area where the nest is being built, should I remove the planst and expose the bowl or does it like the cover, what to do with it when changing water or cleaning?

My other betta whos in a tank has not bothered to set up anything in the two weeks I have had him.

Just water change as normal,,,,he's happy lol. He'll build another. One of mine has been building constantly for three months now and it usualy floats on top when i water change. One of Big Reds nest stuck on the side then as i re filled the tank it floated back onto the water!!

when betta males build nests they suck in oxygen and then spit it out with a level of saliva that holds the bubble tight but some do not produce enough saliva so this is why they are not lasting long.

also 2 litres is too small for a perm home, hope he is going into something better :good:

many males will build nests if they're content, if they feel a bit cheeky and are in the "mating mood" or if theres a girl close by. As modaz said sometimes the bubbles just aren't sticky enough so they dont stay together very well.

and yes 2ltrs is much too small for a permanent home, hell be much happier in something a bit larger

I warned gold-fisher already...... I don't know what else to say if you don't listen. Really a shame for the poor fish.

Don't worry about the nest staying together. It's not a big deal. Plz get a better home for the guy. *ReMz shakes head*

I plan to get rid of the Gold, Angel and Cat fish and divide the tank to accomadate the Bettas.

Well thats all well and good, but what about the poor other fish? They dont really deserve to be just thrown away because u like another fish better... Why not just buy a new tank for the betta?

Too many issues keeping the others finance, maintenance, tank size, space, water.

He needs to get rid of them anyways.... he has a betta, goldfish, catfish, and angel all in a 5 gallon tank. None of those fish can survive in that individually (except for the betta), let alone together.........

Changed water the bubble nest had completey disintegrated before, but now its make a bigger one, I think covering the exterior of the bowl partially under fake plants has made him happy. How to change water without breaking it.

Why isnt the one in the tank making a nest?

It doesn't matter if it breaks, ther's no eggs in it. Not all of them build, half of mine don't unless with a female

I put my other betta in a seprate bowl and he too made a nest but just for a day after that he lost interest, and even the red one which I put in the bigger tank is not keen on making a nest in there.
