Hi forum community, I purchased a 95litre (20gal) aquarium today in the hope of owning some tropical fish once the water is settled and to the correct pH and so on. I have conditioned the water and added biological supplement and the filter and heater are running, trying to get the water to about 24-25*C.
Just a couple of questions, what are the little bubbles of air (shown in picture) that are attached to absolutely everything? More importantly if they are harmful gases how should I get rid of them?

Secondly I have been looking around and would like to have a betta, some neon tetras (6-8) in there and possibly a pleco and cheery barb, what other fish do you guys recommend or is that enough for this sized tank?

I know it looks bare at the moment, I will be adding gravel and plants etc very soon.

Thanks everyone!

Before you even get fish or do anything else make sure you take a look a the bigginers resource center, and the bubbles won't do anything bad. And about the stocking, it sounds okay to me but make sure that you get a bristle nose Pleco or a Pleco that will stay under 5 inches

I wouldn't put a male betta with cherry barbs or Tetras, they will almost surely bite the fins of your betta.
Also, (as mentioned above) be very careful about what kind of pleco you get. Bushynose or Bristlenose would be great for your tank.

patience patience patience. That's all you need when you start a new tank. Unfortunately, none of these supplements that are supposed to condition the water and filter to instantly cycle it and make it safe for fish really work. If you have a friend of family member who can give you some of the gunk in their filter, that will definitely help, and will nearly instantly cycle your tank, making it safe for fish. If not, you'll have to take a look at the beginners resource center and see the fish in and fishless cycling threads.

To answer your question about the bubbles, they're totally harmless. I get them all the time during big water changes.

I've read many times on the forum that tetras are good tankmates for bettas so long as they are in a school of 6 or more in order to avoid defensive behaviour. Thanks for the advise everyone!

I have neons with my betta and they are docile, so I think that you would be fine having them with yours but if I were you I would get 10+ neons

Strangely enough, I had some cardinal tetras that got very brave when they were in a large group, and nipped at my fighter, but when in a smaller group, were too scared to do so.

Hmmmm, I've never heard of that happening. I would have thought that the Betta posed no threat to them when in a larger group so they would have left it alone but when in a smaller group they would feel threatened and nipped the betta

I merely relate my observations - draw your own conclusions. :good:

Exactly. It's not something I would try when there are other fish out there that we know are great with bettas. I have heard the theory of "8 or more and they won't bother him", but of course that isn't a for sure thing.
