So I come home from work Friday and see two ten-gallons on a stand. One had a hood, filter, gravel and everything! My dad tells me this lady had them at a rummage sale for $15!! So steal for me... FREE. I love my dad.

ANYWHO, he tells me she also has a 20-gallon that she's been trying to KILL the fish in (I almost died... geez) and hasn't cleaned the tank in 8 months, but she'll sell it to me with the fish. So we go back on Saturday and ask how much. She asks how much we paid for the others and says $15 sounds great for the 20, cause she just wants to get rid of it. So I look in and she's got 2 10"+ plecos and 3 white-tip tetras in there. And the tank is beyond gross, but oh well. Cleanable.

So today we go back and get the tank (one of the tetras was dead), had to siphon it all out, put the humongous plecos in a 5-gallon bucket, the tetras in a carrier and go on our merry way. The water was so dirty, it was orange, and all the gravel had to be trashed, but the filter is a bio-wheel. And there's a hood with light, heater, air-pump, 4 air stones, sandstone decorations, thermometer, 2 big bottles of Stress Coat, one big bottle of Algae Destroyer, a 10" net, siphon, etc. Such a steal.

So I go to our uber fish store with the boyfriend today, get another girlie, some gravel and 3 plants. Here's what the preliminary tank looks like (till I can really plant the plants and get some tall ones in the back). Kirsten didn't take to the water change well, so she's not in there... soon.

And here are the huge plecos that I'm trading for some plants tomorrow.

They're so cute!! Too bad I can't keep em.

So whatcha think?

You don't even want to know how disgusting it was. Ugh... the water was BROWN. Yeah, nothing a nice strong hose wouldn't take care of. :p Oh! And the two remaning tetras are doing great with all my girlies!

Glad to hear the story. The fish got lucky and so did you! Keep us posted.

Well, I ended up trading the pretty plecos for 4 neon lite tetras. I'm probably going to take my other tetras out, though. Just too much going on in the tank, you know? I also got myself a plant, then got some more plant stems at Petco later. Then I'm taking out the silks and just going all natural! I'm so excited.

Oh, and the plecos looked sooooo happy in their new 55-gallon home!!

eww! that water is ultra dirty! i'm surprised they even lived  !
uh I hate to disappoint you, but if that water has driftwood or mopani wood in it, it will be "stained" like that (by the tannins in the wood). It's perfectly normal.
And plecos' are poop machines so keeping them in a bucket for even 5 minutes will create a certain amount of poop. Without taking the actual readings of the water, you really cannot tell what the water quality is.
