Hi all.

I didn't want to go the traditional "sloping sand"-route in creating a habitat for my mudskippers.
To start with, I had three Periophthalmodon septemradiatus males. This is not the most aggressive nor largest species of 'skippers, but it still wants to form and defend a small territory.
What I wanted was to create a habitat with multiple spots where the fish can hide from each other's sight.

I started with an old 140 gallon sump tank:

I disassembled the sump to replace the old, scratched front glass with a new one and painted the trims:

For hardscape I wanted to make a DIY root system with multiple little shallow pools and an inbuilt plumming to circulate water in the pools.

Platforms and volume of the scape:

Roots bent of pvc and added volume with foam:

A bit of shaping with a knife:

Hardscape pretty much finished:

Glued in and the first test was very succesfull. All the pools were filled up with just one pump feeding the plumbing system in the scape:

The mudskippers are using the whole scape and seem happy with it:

The tank is still maturing. Water is kept at 1.002-1.003. I'm trying to find plants that would co-operate with me, but haven't had too much luck yet.

There, thanks for looking!

What did you use to cover it? It looks amazing! :hyper:

This picture is absolutely fabulous! Nominate for entry to the FOTM comp!

I think this project is awesome! You should be pleased - it's come out really well! :good:

Have you read this?

Planting brackish aquariums

Some of the information may be a bit out of date. I have to reread it myself and edit it based on the latest trends in the hobby. There are lots of plants that can do well in brackish conditions.

I also want to mention that if you plant this up pretty well, there are competitions where your tank would totally be a contender. Wonderful job with the hardscape on this. Fascinating setup. I'm very impressed. :good:

I second the FOTM competition and there needs to be a caption competition for that shot. LOLOL

The cover is grout (grout contains cement, sand and coloring).

Thanks, I like the story in the photo as well. But to me the technical quality is too poor to enter a competition...
Thanks for your compliment!

Thanks for the link, great information, there. A bunch of the plants suggested I have already tried. I acclimated them for over two months, but still got lousy results. I'm going to have another go, maybe the tank is matured and will support plants better now?

Thanks for your compliments as well!

(Oh, by the way, I just realised there's still a brackish forum in tff. If someone thinks this would be better placed in there, I don't mind a transfer).

What proportions? And what did you use to colour it? You obviously shaped it more as you added more layers, was it easy to work with? Sorry, but I think it's a great effect so am curious.

Fair enough, but I think it would make a refreshing change to the typical cichlids that are entered, and honestly, with the comedy factor of it I think you'd have a good chance.

Woah you are highly creative this is awesome

fish and tank of the month easily imo

Grout is a ready, mixed version with colors and all. I would guess the mix is about 1 part cement / 4 parts very fine sand. I used four different colors in this piece. Light grey, darker grey, brown and black. You can mix them with each other to get a color you desire. I sometimes use color powders to mod the grout, but it's a pain to try and figure out which colors are harmful to fish...

Thanks, creg!

Amazing wow

Incredible setup in both aesthetics and dedication to provide a suitable habitat for the inhabitants. Fantastic work!

This is amazing! Love the mudskippers, they are great. Are you in the UK?

Wow, stunning tank. Love the mudskippers :hyper:

Thanks!
'Skippers are the best. Very active and the most interesting social behaviour.

Thank you for your kind words.
No, not in UK. I'm in Finland.

Thank you!

I'm no photographer. I certainly am no filmmaker.
But here's some overall footage of the tank, shot with a Nokia N8 phone.
