having been to 2 different lfs with my mate and both of them have told him therers no need to do water changes until every three weeks he seems to accept that this is fine and theres no need to change it weekly which i have told him but wont listenn cause he seems to think the lfs must know more than me which is fair enough but im fed up telling him till im blue in the face do not rely on your tank being ok cause the water is clear oh well he will find out the hard way when his fish start dieing

Hi, I had a similar thing happen the other day. I went home to visit my folks and got to talking about fish (they have a small hexagonal gimic tank) and my Stepfather told me that doing water changes weekly or even every two weeks was not needed as the guy in the shop told him that it only needed to be done every three months My stepfather seems to have issues with beleiving what i am telling him.

water changes are not needed every week.... the intervals depend entierly on your stock levels and the filtration you have...

we have a planted tank that in theory, dosnt really need water changes... the filtration turns waste into nitrates... the plants then use the nitrates...

test the water... when nitrates get too high - do a water change... you'll get to know when it needs changing.
