My Marine Tank

My appologies Jessica if i had missed you in the marine section. I do make an effort ot answer as many posts as possible and to read all if possible. :*) I do hope you found the advice given to you to be of some help.

OK as far as you tank is at present. Adding shrimps or any invert for that matter is a tiny bioload for the liverock and really wont add much to assist the bacteria in sustaining their population. This is why a marine invert tank can pack corals/shrimps/crabs ect tightly with no impact on the bioload whatsoever.

I would add a small fish.. perhaps a small goby or firefish.. just to keep the bioload stable and fed with ammonia (marine fish constantly breath out ammonia).

There is no need to go out and get loads of fish of course, just a small on e for now that is a good beginner fish and will pose no real problems for you in keeping it.

Oops, only just saw your post now Navarre! :*) I went to a new marine specialist shop near me today and bought some stuff! I got about 2 kilos of live rock with some little corals on (they were free as they were already on the rock! :D ). Its just some xenia (sp?) and some little mushrooms apparently!

Here it is at the moment. I plan to add some more soon (waiting for money to go into my account! ) but this is it for the moment!

The polyps you are probably Clavularia sp and not Xenia. Many shops call it Xenia is a completely different coral although they commonly call this srot of polyp Xenia :/

You should be able to add a couple of clowns as long as they are small. I did the very same thing last weekend.. Saturday i addec the liverock and within an hour the clowns, 60 cleanup crew and 2 cleaner shrimp were added also. No water perameters problems, no losses and everything is working well after 1 week. Its a friends tank i setup and this weekend he is adding more liverock and more fish. (not sure what though ).

Update on the tank...

As well as the two clowns i got last week i have added about 4 more snails and today have bought another 4 kilos of live rock very cheaply from someone on another forum! :D She also let me have a little urchin thing.

Here's a pic, terrible quality, sorry! Im not sure i'll leave the rock like this as it looks as though its just been piled  But what do you think??

Jessica your tank is really coming on great I see that you have invested in at least one clownfish, looks as though he is right at home.

Keep us all updated on your progress as with enough inspiration I may even venture into saltwater myself someday.

Thanks John :) I have a pair of clowns, the other one must have been hiding in the 'caves' in the rock! :D They're doing really well and seemed to have settled in great! They're such active little fish and not at all shy! They come to the front as soon as they see dinner too..

The corals on the new pieces of rock seem to be coming out really well and the urchin, who i was worried about is moving around the tank cleaning up any algae now! I shall get some better pics later! :D

And i'd definately reccommend anyone else try SW! Its fascinating to learn about it and see how it develops, plus its great fun! A lot more expensive than FW though, but not as expensive as a lot of people thing though. I've spent probably £200 on this tank so far (more if the new live rock had been bought at a shop) but i think it'll be worth it :)

Looks good so far Jessica! :good:

I am slowly gathering info and parts for my marine tank which i will start in the next few months.
Sorry to post this in you thread but here goes.

Am i correct in thinking that if you buy cured live rock you can start stocking straight away? Unlike freshwater tanks which need to cycle? do marines not cycle or mature?
