I finished re-cycling my tank the other day, after trying to get rid of the mysterious illness my fish had gotten, they were swimming around all fine and so forth, i left for college this morning, everything fine, then i come back, my mother snaps off my head, only to find, my fish tank had crack right across the bottom, the water had all come out, my mum had saved the fish! (THANK GOD!), my heater didnt crack when it was out of the water (THANK GOD!), however my bedroom was flooded, and it was so bad, the water was dripping down into the sitting room below, my airpumps had been pulled down and fell into the water, shorting the out, my lights had fallen into the waters as well, the plug sockets were all soaked! However, after quick reaction, i now have NO bedroom carpet, but the floor boards are now dry, however my parents and i are debating upon whether the ceiling beams will be ok, but so far so good...

I found out what would be the most likely reason why my tank cracked

My nextdoor neighbour is building a Conservatory, and so took a hammer drill to the wall...

(Please note i live in a terrice (sp?) housing)

And it was so bad it was knocking things off our walls, and so the vibrations must have been sent through the wall and so cracked my tank, which so happened to be against the wall he started Drilling on... Now what topped my cake was that he NEVER came around to tell us he would be drilling, and now look, i almost lost my fish, and i just lost aload of money, due to someones idiotic decisions!

If any consolation is that my mum is willing to buy me a new 3 foot tank, since this one i have is totally beyond repair, because the crack is that big...

I just want it soon, because some of my fish that i put into one of the other tanks, tend to fight with the fish i have been forced to put into the tank along with them...

:(

 That is crazy..... Im so sorry to hear that....

Sounds like it could well of been the drilling, if the tank was pretty flush to the wall and it was upstairs so the vibes could go through the beams....

I lived in a terraced house and man, i hope something like that never happens to me....

Congratulations to your mum - top woman for saving your fish!! Id get her a nice bunch of flowers for that (or maybe a new ceiling ;) :p )

I hope you get the new tank soon and things start to become normal again.
I feel for you, i really do.....

Good luck :/

I think you'd be lucky to get compensation - there's nothing wrong with drilling in your own home. I know you say that he/she didn't come and tell you that he was going to drill, but even if he had, would you honestly have thought "oh, hang on, the neighbours will be drilling, so I'd better take my fish outside". Presumably he/she didn't think that either...

Just an unfortunate accident, I'm afraid. :(

EDIT:
You need to get permission from the COUNCIL before you go doing extensive building work on any house. (the concil must notify neighbours) And if they failed to do this, then it's likely you can get some form of compensation, especially if a carpet and large tank has been destroyed.

Get onto the council.

Insurance would be a option if my blady dad did it! We could have claimed on the ceiling, new carpet, new paint and the fish tank if my dad insured the house when my mother told him, and now look, he didnt do it and now we have to fork out alot of money to repair the damage, but there are a few bright sides to this all... One my bedroom needed re-decorating, so that will get my dad moving, because there is some new wallpaper for my room sitting under the stairs right now, and i needed a new carpet anyhows, and then my mum wanted to re-decorate the down stairs and put up new wallpaper and now she can, because it is a MUST DO! situation...

As for the nextdoor neighbour, if he had come around, i would have told him to take it easy, because i have TWO tanks against that wall...

See the only reason this actually happened, is he tend to really FORCE the drill into the wall, making the loudest noise possible, I am suprise that my baby fry which was in a smaller tank next to that one, didnt die from stress or sher shock, but as i said, he didnt and now look, my fish went through a stressful process after the tank cracked

It was my mother who discovered it firstly she grabbed my PC off the floor then she grabbed a bucket, because it was gushing out of the bottom of the tank, and then hooked out the fish and put them in there, along with the heater, before ripping out all the towel's we have in the house and throwing them all over my floor...

Right now, we have the whole central heating on, and loads of portable fire out, heating my room and in the sitting room below my floor, you can smell dampness all over the house, but by the looks of it, the damage isnt as much as we were fearing due to the amount of water...

I admit, my mum is a miricle worker, and she does deserve a EXTRA special christmas present

;)
