Hello guys and gals

I am a native to North Carolina, although for the last 15.5 years I have been in the military I still claim my southern state as being home. I have been a fish keeper sine I was 9 or so years old, ever since I started catching tadpoles in the ditches in front of my parents house. It took me several years to get a tadpole to make it to adult froghood, but during that time I found that fish keeping was a bit better than tadpoles. The first fish that I was able to get to spawn and keep almost every baby alive was the least killifish. From there my hobby drove my mom nuts and my dad was more than helpful in bringing fish home for me to put in my tank. He eventually bought me a 75 gal tank that filled up with natives faster than my mom could count them, and my younger sister just want to name them but ran out of name even faster.

I didnt start into the tropical fish until I joined the army and got back from Saudi the first time (1991), I got married to the wicked witch of the north (she was from NY) and was able to get a 3 bedroom place that was quickley filled up with tanks. I breed mainly africans but what kept my hobby alive was the perfectly matched pair of oscars that I had. They would have enough babies to supply my hobby with tanks and just about anything from the 3 LFS that I wanted. I would have never purchased the oscars but I went to a fish show and the main speaker there was telling everyone about how he paid for his cadillac, then he showed us pictures of his set up. He had two pair of oscars that put out around 500 to 1000 eggs each month, he sold the survivors for .50 ea and in 1992 or 1993 that would have more than made the car payment. So from that I started with the oscars, and they supported my hobby hands down.

I have since remarried and have 2 kids (oh one from the first wife) and will be building my retirement house this summer and plan on adding a built in fish tank to the livingroom, guess what the occupents of that tank will be. They may even make my house payment for me. LOL

Haha nativecollector, that was good reading. I would have never guessed that oscars could provide that much income. The only person I know that has made a substantial amount of money on oscars is Dick Au, from San Francisco. He is also a breeder of discus and has a few books on discus. Dick was one of the 1st breeders to breed albino oscars. He made a ton on those albino oscars.

Welcom to the forum :) I'm really glad you joined us.

From a fellow North Carolinian, hello and welcome to the forum. :hi:

The oscar thing sounds interesting. I have thought on several occasions about getting an oscar but don't have the room for another large tank at the moment. I hope you enjoy the forums. It is a very friendly place and very active. Most importantly, there are a lot of very knowledgable people here.

PS: Thank you for your service to our country.

thanks guys,

The oscar set up was rather interesting, He has a 100 gallon tank divided in half with a breeding pair on each side. Then somewhere else in his house he has about a million grow out tanks, lol, it seemed like that many anyways. As the parents would get the new batch free swimming he would move them (not really sure at what stage) to the grow out tanks until he (as he put it) needed to make a payment. He supplied around 5 or so fish stores with his oscars and one dealer. When I started tring to do the same thing it took me almost 2 years before I broke even. But when I finally left that area I had around a 75 dollar credit at the fish store and since I knew the owner (well had gotten to know him) real well I had him use the credits to help set up a tank at one of the local schools that a freind of mines kid went to.

Ok enough about that, I have a bunch of stories to tell but I guess this isn't really the place.

What part of NC are you in rdd1952?

Oh thats a good little ways away, but with the way they have opened up the four lanes from here to raleigh it dont take that long to get out that way any more. I am all the way over in Elizabeth City.

Nice area. I've always wanted to live closer to the coast. At least till hurricane season starts up every year.
