Decided about a month ago to see how long my plants would survive out of the substrate. So for all of them are still alive and all look well.

I know its a bit strange and pointless but I'm interested to see how long they could survive just floating about.

Depends what plants and if there are substances they can consume from water.

What plants are they? I take it they're all stems and/or moss?

Most of them are very similar to the kind of weed u get in lakes. I'm rubbish with the names of plants. I can only just about remember the names of the fish I've got lol apart from those weed type plants the rest are plants with stems.

I did have a few valis (I think that's what they were called) but they died off pretty quickly lol

as said above most plants will do OK without substrate, they will take what they need from the water column.

Great way to prove the above
One thing worth noting, while we can see that plants don't need to feed from the substrate (as I say, if you dose the water column, the substrate is still wet...) One thing [most] roots aren't keen on is light

I've been quite surprised I'm goin to replant them soon because it don't look very good with all the plants floating about but its been good to watch. I never believed that they could take what they needed from the water. But I've been pleasantly surprised lol
