in liew of certain other threads (like "ignore this") i decided to name my thread something else, knowing I could get a few more posts from a more catchy title. so, you might as well stay, since you already opened the thread!

My 20 Gallon has a recent addition of 4 glass cats...these are also known as ghost cat and x ray fish...anyways, they all seem to hide in my little rock cave, and i never see them to know they are okay.i make sure to get frozen brine shrimp in there, but i dont know if they eat it, are there any suggestions that can get them out more often? what kind of plants do you reccomend to stay at the surface and dim the light? these are also with neons so i dont think i can turn the light off completely. any help would be awsome!

Ahhhh you little...... :grr: :grr:
Well, I don't know about glass cats, but maybe you don't have enough of them in there, or you need some dither fish like danios. In any case, I would do some serious research on the species.
You little trickster... :grr: :sly: :shifty:

If you just added them recently they may take awhile to come out, especially if you have more active fish like the neons in your tank. I have 5 in my 120 gallon along with pretty active fish like platies, mollies, neons and clown loaches. They all huddle together in one of the planted corners of my tanks. It is a fake plastic plant along with some sort of tall plant that I am not sure the name of (sorry, not too good with plant names) They also hide in a rainbow rock I got along time ago for my 29 gallon set-up. It has two 3 inch long holes in it and the just hide there when startled, they feel safe there.

When I bought the recent 4 (I only had one previously because all of the others died on me :-( ) they didn't come out at all and hid for about a week. They didn't come out for food and I was scared they would starve. I would put some flakes under the filter and make sure they would sink to the bottom where they hung out in the tank at night. After about a week, they are coming out at feeding time and even coming to the surface to snatch a bloodworm or a flake at the top of the tank. :D Some prefer sucking up the leftovers at the bottom and some prefer coming to the middle or top of the tank to eat.

A way you can check if you glass cats are getting enough food is to check their "silver bags" that is their stomach. If it looks empty, they probably haven't been eating, but this is normal or atleast IME for them not to eat or really come out for a few days until they get used to their new home. If it is really fat that means your glass cats are pigging out when you're not looking! :p

Hope that helped a little. And hey, I titled my thread that because I had to! It posted twice by accident. :/

are these the same things as chanda glassfish (<-- like salt in their water)?

anyways, try adding some duckweed if you can find it or just some tall, broad-leaved plants (a number of amazon swords meet this criteria).

i was actually wondering why on earth would someone blender a fish? all i could figure was "adds protein"

They are asian glass catfish or Kryptopterus minor. Or you may have an African glass catfish. Mine are asian glass cats and I think they are easier to find than the African ones but I am not 100% sure. Oh yea, they also like daphnia or freeze-dried plankton I read. I can never find any at my LFS's but I know they like it.

nope...cant be...these are scaleless, it would NOT be a good idea to put any salt in with these boogers.

:throws hands up in defense: hey, hey, hey! just asking man... you only gave the common, not the scientific. i just wanted to see if we were on the same page; i've seen chandas called x-ray fish before in the store.

sheesh, of all the things i've said today, that's what i get the most grief over?

wasnt attacking, just saying in an emphasis, without having to use the italics thingy...maybe if i put a little *chuckle* thing after it it might clear that up.thats why i added "boogers" totally harmless comment i swear!

Hi... I have three glass cats doing really well. One thing no one mentioned...they like some current. I have an AC 70 on my tank and all three hang in the current from the intake. They undulate midtank in it. They do tend to be shy and I think the 'dither' fish is a good thought. Sometimes, I have to toss in some food so that a current will carry it to them on the surface. Dried bloodworms work well for this or breaking some flake into small pieces. Mine don't seem to have any problem with lighting except at nighttime they retreat to the back of the tank behind the plants. Hope this helped. SH

Oh yea, forgot about the current. I guess because mine don't usually hang around the current at all. :dunno:

Maybe if you had placed this in the correct forum and not used a silly topic title you would have got more replies.
