HI to who is reading this your going to read my heater story.

Well i was looking at my fishtank and i wanted a change of the colour of the gravle.
so i asked my dad if he can take me to my local fish shop he said "yes"
so off we went.I was in th shop looking at the fish in there tanks and the gravle was black and i said to a shop helper "can you get me some of that black gravle" she said "yes" so i got 2 tubs of gravle both black cuz they where small.I got home and i could'nt wait so i rushed and i was getting my old gravle out and putting that in to a empty bin. Then i looked at the water and it was a black/brown colour so i dicided to do a 75% water change. So i turned off my filter and airpump. So i startes to emptyas i got about halfway i herd a carckaling noise i looked at my heater and it was smoking :( (ahhh panic panic) so i turned it off and got some warmish water and poored that on to it but when i did that it carcked.( it was hten i remembered i forgot to turn it off )So i had to go to the fish shop again to buy a new heater. When i got back i finished filling the tank with fresh water and putting the black gravle in and fitting the heater in place.

My tank looks great now.

Thanks for reading

Alex

yep I'm afraid the heating element in these submerged heater/thermostats need to be in water all the time when switched on of they will blow and smash... so I think you know that next time turn it off along with your filter when doing a major water change when the levels are gonna drop. sorry to hear about it though mate.. but we learn from our mistakes hey. :D

When I first got into fish keeping I did much the same thing!! I wouldn't worry to much about it. just make sure you turn the power off the heater on water changes. I haven't managed to break one ever since!

Yeah thanks bulldog know i will remember for the rest of my life i hope.
