Hi there folks, I noticed this injury on my gourami the other day, so I took a photo to show you guys.

I am not sure what it is or how it happenend. Briefly, it looks like he has been bitten to the flesh by something, I do have a CAE in the tank but it is pretty small at the moment cause I thought that irt may have been chewing away at the gouramis skin.

But the wound looks quite deep. have a look at the pic and see what you think.

Water parameters are amonia 0 nitrtite 0 nitrate 25 and Ph is 7.5 - 8

Hi :)

From the pic, it just looks like it's lost a few scales. That can happen quite easily if it scratches against something or gets nipped. If that's all it is, clean water and time will heal it and the fish will be fine.

However, many gouramies are prone to ulcers - is there any red coloring or any other sign of inflamation?

What about white fuzz? A cottonwool-like or fuzzy growth may indicate the beginnings of a secondary bacterial or fungal infection.

Without knowing what has caused this and what's wrong, you are best off leaving it for a while until you see a change - in size, color or depth - so it can be diagnosed properly and treated.

Just to make sure, there are no other signs of disease right?

Hiya Sylvia,

There is no red colouration around the wound and seems to be no inflamation and there is definately no white fuzz on it.

I did a 40-50% water change yesterday. So I will keep an eye on him over the next few days to see what happens.

I dont think there are any otyher signs of disease although I did spot a tiny tiny lump on the side of its mouth, but it was hard to tell if it has always been there. I will try to check more thoroughly later on.

Thanks sylvia for the help  I will keep you posted :D .

Keep a close eye on it. My thoughts were the beginning of an ulcer, but I also agree It could be a few missing scales.

Hi there, I checked the gourami last night the lump on his mouth just looks like it is actually part of his mouth it doesn't look abnormal or anything.

That's good. Just keep a close eye on it and post as soon as you see any change -either in the lump or the discolred patch. Also make sure the gourami is eating properly and acting normal. It will hopefuly be fine.

Just to make certain because this has been nagging me, how big is the CAE?

hiya Sylvia I have been away so I have not check ed this thread,

The CAE is about 1.5 inches to 2 inches long. its not big at the mo, will it get alot bigger. -_-

At 1-2" it'll still be relatively peaceful and should not realy pose a threat towards your gourami. The things about CAEs is that they do get large - to 10" in fact - and, at around 3-6", when they are reaching sexual maturity, they start to display a lot more aggression and also become territorial towards each other. At first, the most they'll do is chase other fish around and the aggression isn't yet very noticeable as it manifests itself only in aggression towards similar looking species. However, they quickly move on to inflicting actual injuries and many will suck the slime coat from flat-bodied or larger, slow fish, such as gouramies. Once large enough to do so, they'll also start eating or, at the very least, attacking smaller fish and, by this time, have stopped eating algae entirely. Most people don't keep their CAE past 6". IME, it's much better to either return or re-home it long before then. If you wish to keep it, a tank of 15-20 gallons is ok temporarily but, once the fish approaches 10", it'll need at elast a 30 gallon. As I think is obvious from the above, this is not a peaceful community fish and should also not be kept with anything that looks similar to it. If you must keep it with something, larger fast-moving barbs or relatively aggressive cichlids are best.

Nice one cheers sylvia, I think I might get around to finding a new home for the wee brute now so as I dont have a problem later.

I had bought it for my other tank to keep the algae down but I am selling that tank and I fired him into my other one for now. But with your advice I think it would be best to get rid of him.

I just need to figure out how to tell my daughter that her beloved wee fish is going away. :-( -_- .

cheers Sylvia
