my friend has just dug up her old 15ltr tank, i am going to help her set it back up, i have already suggested that a betta could go in there...but when she came round the other day she sed she liked the look of the guppies i have, could a few of them be kept in a tank that size and if so how many(males only)??? and of corse i dont mean with the betta, i mean insted of it....

You could put the guppies in with the betta. Also, you could probably put like 8+ guppies in the tank although you might want to be careful as male guppies can become aggressive towards each other when no females are present.

guppies and bettas are a no no..... :/

15 ltr is about 3.9 US gallons. Perfect for a betta as you thought. But she might be able to keep a couple of guppies in there instead (not bettas with guppies), two or three max. If she goes with guppies though, she will need a filter and heater, and she will need to cycle the tank or clone it off one of yours. Guppies don't usually handle the cycling process. And to keep in mind that keeping all males will sometimes be just fine, but to watch them just in case.

yea i was thinking about 3 guppies..but i did tell her she would have to have heater...and of corse im going to tell he about about cycling and give her some of my filter media to colonize her tank....we are going to the pet shop toghter later so i will tell her what she needs to get and what to do... :D yay good deed of the day...helping a friend...

I agree w/what's already been said - probably 3 guppies max, and bettas + guppies = disaster.

Good luck, how fun!

I'm sorry, but I find it sorta strange that I get yelled at for suggesting five guppies in a five gallon in another thread, when this is three in a three gallon. :dunno: Maybe it's just me....

Yah, I see what you mean. 3 guppies in a 3.9 gallon is overstocked. Because guppies grow about 2 inches even more so that would be 6 inches of fish at the lowest. And 5 guppies in a 5 gallon would also be overstocked...that would be about 10" of fish. So I don't think anybody should be yelling at NinjaSmurf for suggesting 5 guppies for a 5 gallon when you are all suggesting 3 guppies for a 3.9 gallon...but anyways, I don't even know if any of you guys were involved in the other thread, and I myself have not read the other thread that NinjaSmurf is talking about, so I could be wrong.

all done....only bought 2 guppies neways.....so dont worry :p, she happy now...and has joined this forum..

Well. I've only just seen this thread- otherwise I'd have been right in there Ninja!

Guppies are not suitable fish for such a small tank. It's not just about stocking and inches; it's about the individual requirements of different species of fish. Guppies are active little creatures who need to move about and explore. They would lead a very frustrated life in such a small tank, and I believe it would affect their health; they would certainly not be living their lives to full guppy potential.

(I imagine the person who suggested 8+guppies misread litres as gallons).

:*) Earlier, when I looked at the size of the tank I assumed it was gallons, sorry. Also, I had meant to say female bettas as I have had success with guppies and a female betta being together.

and btw...is thinkin of getting a bigger tank...she just wants to see how they get on....

ahhh didnt..think ud read it rite...hehe :p
