I bought a new fish so I moved my fish to a bigger tank in my room, well anyways my fish tank smells awful and I was wondering how I could fix that or if anyone knew what it was. I have 5 medium sized tiger barbs and a small oscar which I plan to move to a bigger tank if there becomes a problem between them(such as Oscar eating the tiger barbs). Well any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Have you tried putting carbon in the filter? That is supposed to be good for getting rid of smells

Foul smell = foul water

Do a major water change (75%) then buy your self a water testing kit

You say you 'moved the fish to a bigger tank', was this a new tank? was it cycled or did you just fill it up and add the fish?

If that's the case then what you have there is a big tankfull of raw sewage with no good bacteria to clean it.

That's why you need to do a water change and soon!

Mine smells a bit like a green house- especially after the light has been on all day...
Is THAT normal?! I'm quite heavily live planted with bog wood.

If it's an earthy smell, then yes, that's normal. If the small makes you gag, then no.

Earthy yes! Made me think of peat.

Not sickly. Just noticeable when I lift the hatch for feeding.

My tanks all have that earthy smell which is faint but nice. Too bad it only extends around the tanks though. Would save using air freshners. :p The smell is a good, natural one so you should want that. Some people say any smell is bad but the only bad ones are when the tank smells like a toilet or repulsive in some other way.
