I have been giving them the veggies. My cory nibbles them some, but the Mollies and pleco ignore them. I need to know which veggies to give and how to fix them. I had someone tell me to blanch or par boil them except they forgot to tell me what that meant. lol Guess she figured it was easy enough I would know what that was. Some one please explain. I have been putting them in the microwave till soft. They don't like that. Also how long do you leave them in the tank? I put them in at night and take them out in the morning. Thanks--- Amanda

I am also feeding flake food and freeze dried blood worms. What else do they need? Someone please tell me something I am desperately trying to get these mollies happy. I finally got there water right, but they just don't seem happy.

Have you tried feeding frozen peas?
To prepare them I boil a few in a pan for 4 minutes. Then I take the husks off and squash them a bit and then drop into the tank.

Fisha re pretty fussy when it comes to eating something new so you may need to try a few times before they will eat it. I find starving them until they take it works.

Blanch is to add to boiling water for a few seconds until softened. When i add lettuce i use a cup of boiled water and drop the lettuce leaf in until it goes soggy. It doesnt take long.

Cucumber you can leave floating on the top and leave it in as it will sink af ter a day and the plec can finish it. My plecs have learnt to go look for it on the surface but he isnt shy.

You could make your own food by mixing a tin of tuna * in springwater* with boiled peas, and any other green veg such as blanched brocolli, carrot and bloodworm or daphnia and blend until smooth. Add some melted gelatin and put into ice cube trays. Once frozen you can take a block out, defrost and feed. Half the quantity if you dont have many fish.

You can add and take away food depending on the type of fish. Cichlids may prefer a more potein food or livebearers more greenery.

I feed my platies:

peas prepared as described by black angel

broad beans d:eek:

sprouts d:eek: (though I chop them a bit)

broccoli: as sprouts

lettuce as described by black angel

spinach d:eek:

I have also found that you may need to try each food a couple of times

Thank You! Now do you mix the gel like it says on the box or more concentrated? What does d:eek: mean? How often should I give it to them? Do they really eat tuna? By the way, looks like 2 are going to have babies in a couple of weeks. Maybe I will get to save some of the fry. I still have the other 6, but I think they are getting sick. I am going to post a new question for that. If you see it please help if you can. Thanks again. Amanda

d:eek: (ditto) means 'the same as above'

actually to blanch is to boil for a few minutes until partly cooked, then to put immediately into cold water so it stops cooking, this prevents it from continuing cooking afterwards and going soggy.

that being said if people say to blanch in a lot of cases they mean to par boil which is just cook in boiling water for a few minutes until partly cooked.

if your struggling to get them to eat veggies because they won't sink or are just drifting round the tank you can always weigh things down with plant leads or get a veggie clip that sticks to the side of the tank.

I am ordering a veggi clip, but it won't hold peas. How do you get them to stay put so the fish can eat them? Also what kind of peas and beans should I give them? They don't like sweet peas. I tried that?
They do like the cucumber better now though. YEA! I am getting better.
Thank you so much. Yall are so nice and so helpful. I love this site!
My mollies thank you too as they were not happy with my performance before I found this site.

ha ha glad you and you mollies are happier!!

the peas should sink so they can eat them, just normal peas, i use frozen one's, same as I eat myself. Just boil em for a few seconds, take the husk off and squish them a bit and they'll sink.
