Hello. I have a blue dwarf gourami which i had for close to 8 months. He has been acting funny lately. He used to swim around and always look for food. However for the past few days, he's just been idleing on the top of the surface not moving at all. He then starts to sink and then he just swims back up for some air and stays there. Also it seems like he's only trying to move the top part of his body and doesnt kick too much with the tail. He does seem alittle discolored. I have not done a water change yet in like a week. The ph seems fine. I'm not sure what it is. Please help!

I took the water to my local fish store. They said that the water was ok. They arent sure what whats causing this problem.

I had two of them die with similar symptoms, and at about the same time as you. I couldn't find my origional thread, so here are pics and a brief summary.

I noticed that they (they both died about a month apart) were very lethargic and didn't appear to be eating. One actually was swimming nearly vertical with his mouth to the surface. When I netted them, they didn't put up a fight at all. There was also a dark blue streaking happening on the face (through the eyes that when down to the bottom of his body). I hope this is not the case of yours; mine seemed to suffer for awhile before they died.

I did a Google search and found an article about a virus that gouramis can get. "Clinical signs associated with the presence of the virus have included darkening of body coloration and lethargy. Sick gouramis often stop eating and the abdomen may be distended..."

Has yours been eating? Maybe he has this intestinal virus? Do you have other gouramis in the tank?

oh no!! i tried feeding it and its not eatting :-( he's the only fish in the tank

The article mentioned that the mortality rate was low to moderate and that the ones that died usually did so within 24-48 hours of showing symptoms. So maybe your little guy will recover and be ok!

Just wanted to let you know that he's still alive. Here are some pictures of the little guy. Please let me know if the pictures arent working

Well, it appears that he is clamping his fins, which is a sign of stress. How do his fins look? Are they intact, shredded, or edged in black or opaque?

his fins seems fine, but i just noticed something right now. He started to grow something out of his right gill. Its greenish and its sticking out alittle. Also, theres alittle patch of green on the side as well. What is happening??

Have you checked out the pinned article in the Tropical Fish Emergencies section - A-Z of fish diseases? Maybe you'll find something there.

Good luck! I hope you can find out what this is so you can start treating him.

My fish seems alittle bit better, but from the looks of it, it could be a parasite. I went out and bought an otc parasite medicine. Its called parasite clear and its made by tank buddies. I hope it works.
