As I mentioned about a week ago, I worked on getting a URL and putting in some fish into my database. This is just an educational project for me, so I can learn about fish, php, and MySQL.

I put in all the catfish and livebearers sections from our fish index. I'll try to work on adding more content as time goes on.

Anyway, here is the URL:

http://www.aquariumdatabase.com

There is a small intro page there, and a link to the database. Let me know if you have any suggestions.

Hi. Something I always like to know when researching new fish is what water hardness they prefer. I like to try to tailor the hardness to the liking of the fish as opposed to messing with the pH. Something else i noticed was the 2 colums for pH max and min. I think you could lose one column and just put pH 6-7 etc. Other than that it looks pretty good.

Thanks for the input. I actually do have fields in there for water hardness, but I have then hidden in that search page. This is because I had a very hard time find that information for most of the fish. From what I have read, there is Gh and Kh, but some fish profiles list neither, one, or just have a general statement about it like "soft-medium water hardness". Because of these inconsistencies in fish profiles, it is hard for me to find a consistent way of entering the data. (so it is searchable)

I was not sure now to appoach temp and PH ranges, but thought that by including min and max fields for both, that it would be easier for someone to search on the fields. If someone wanted to search for a fish that was good for their tank temp of 77 degrees, it would be hard if their were just one tank field that said 72-80. You can't really do a search on a text field and find out that 77 is between 72 and 80.

Anyway, thanks again for the input! I'll try to keep adding to it. After there are a few hundred entried, it will be very usefull I think.

Ah, i see why you did the pH how you did it now. Never thought about the search function. I usually go to fishbase.org when researching a fish and they usually have a DH or degree of hardness number for the fish. DH basically means GH. KH isn't as important because as long as it has a degree of hardness of least 4 or so then you know the water is stable and the pH won't fluctuate.
