Hello, everyone!

This is my first post...bear with me.

My name is Jamie and I am (already) a Bettaholic. It has been 8 days since I purchased my first Betta (actually 2), and I'm up to 5.

Ok, to start. I've personally never had Bettas. My mom had one at her office in a 5 gallon tank and she had him for 2 years. His name was Dave.

Anyway, I've had a couple of 10 gallon community tanks for several years, mostly mollies and lately platies. I've even successfully raised one platy fry from birth to. . . well, I think he's a year old now!! So, there's one 10 gallon in the kitchen/dining room and there's one in my bedroom. The one in my bedroom had 4 platies in it and for various reasons over the past 2 months, they all one by one died, and I never bothered to replace them as they were dying off. So once the tank was empty, I went to  Wal-mart  and was going to get a goldfish or two and just have those for a while. But of course, when you go looking for something they have like a total of 4 to choose from, and I didn't like any of them (I'm a big fan of the fancy calicos, and they had none of those).

So I happened to stroll by the Bettas (which I always do). (Sidenote: the Walmarts around here all have the bigger cups, the ones with white lid, preprinted with Male Betta and the SKU #). Anyway, as I peruse the Bettas, one cup caught my eye, and I had to do a double-, triple-, and quadruple-take. Two Bettas in one cup!

Both were still alive, though it was obvious that one was the winner and the other was not. So in the cart they went. I knew that I could house the two in the 10G tank because I have a breeding basket (the net type) from Platy fry days.

(Sidenote 2: There was no one working in the pet section at that time, so my thoughts are that there were some punk-@$$ teenagers that dumped the two together :grr: )

So here are my Bettas! (Finally I get to the point)

(Also if anyone can tell me anything about the colors (or the proper name for the color) of each, I would appreciate it!!!!

Merlin
The poor beat up fellow. I really didn't expect him to make it, but its been 8 days and he seems well. He's not as active as the rest but he eats like a pig and I even got him to flare once!! I've been treating him with Melafix (which I read now to dilute, so I've started that). I originally had him in the basket until he could hold himself straight, he spent the first 2 days nose down in the corner of the basket. Now hes in a 1G tank all to himself. Aside from the lack of fins, his head/gills were pretty beat up (now they aren't as bloody looking) and I think that he has a pop-eye, though I'm not really sure what that looks like and I tried to get a picture, but never could. Any suggestions for that? (Excuse my thumb in the photo!)

Royal
This is the guy that was in the same cup as Merlin. Haven't had a problem with this guy. He is one of the most aggressive of the bunch. Now he's in the 10G tank (3 Bettas in there, but they are all separated) I've got it divided with a standard plastic divider type thing and then on one side I have a hard plastic breeding thing...but not the small ones, this ones pretty good sized with the flow through holes on the bottom. I've been rotating Royal and one of the others in and out of this divider. They seem happy...Bubblenests and all

He's the hardest one to photo....the lights were boucing around to much on him, but finally got these!

Royal flaring...he's in the very back of the tank here, that's why its so dark... (I guess anyway)

The next 3 Bettas I got a few days after the first 2 (along with more tanks!)

Rogue
Rogue is the least photogenic, he saw the camera and promptly swam to the back of his tank! Silly, finally got this one, but its a little dark. He came from Petsmart where all of their Bettas looked healthy but they were in the smaller cups. Rogue just caught my eye. He's in a 1G tank now, sitting next to Merlin's.

Johnny
Johnny also came from Petsmart. He was so cute in his cup, flaring away at everything that moved! He's also very photogenic, loves to come up and pose for me! He's in the 10G on the divided side with Royal (they get switched in and out of the smaller divider)

He has this spot on his head...is it part of his coloring? It hasn't changed any since I got him, so I guess that it's part of him. Is that called something in particular?

Terk
Finally, Terk. He came from another Walmart (not the same one as Merlin and Royal). He's in the 10G in the other half from Royal and Johnny. This guy has been building a huge bubblenest since the 2nd day home! Also had a hard time getting his picture, but this one I really liked!

I think its neat the way his body made the air bubbles purple!

And one from the side...

Here's one of my 10G tank, set up with all 3 in there. . . So you can get an idea for the size of that basket deal.

Thats Johnny on the left, with Royal in the smaller part. And Terk is on the right. The divider thing is about 5 inches deep (from front to back, not top to bottom) and there's a spacer where it hits the tank side so that another fish can actually swim all the way around it.

Anyway, sorry to ramble so, but wanted to post!

Please, if you can tell me anything about any of them, please do!

Your beat-up boys look quite nice now. They look healthy in spite of all that happened to them.

First of all, your Bettas are all Veiltails. That's their tail type, and it's the most common. It refers to the shape of their tails.

Merlin appears to be a Piebald Blue Marble.

Royal appears to be Turquiose.

Rogue is red. (Well, obviously!)

Johnny looks like a green-iridescent traditional Cambodian. This means he's pale-colored with red fins, and the green-iridescent part means that he has a green shimmer to him.

Terk is a Multicolor.

And I think I got everyone.

Scout & Daudy: Thanks! I like his look too, even though he really doesn't want me to take a picture. In that one, he reminds me of an old man propped up on a cane. (Call me crazy!)

Kiarra: Thanks so much on the info for colors. I've been trying to jot stuff down in a journal (as far as descriptions, meds, feeding, all that) and until I named them, was tired of calling one "pink body with red fins" or "blue with a black head". Makes it much easier with having true names for the colors!

That's awesome how the air bubbles look purple. Before I read that I was thinking |was she throwing gravel in or something haha| I know unthinkable, but ya never know!! They are all adorable. I started out like you about a year ago, and I am up to 14 with no more room, actually no more room about 4 tanks ago!!

You can ramble anytime you feel like it!
Great post, great pics, beautiful bettas, beautiful tank, love all the names you picked........shall I go on?

Melafix was a great call. There are many different meds to treat popeye but you may not need to. Popeye is pretty obvious, you'd probably know if he has it. Just keep an eye on him. Melafix will treat minor infections and whatnot so you may have caught him in time before anything really kicks in.

I love your tank! I have a 10 gallon divided into 3 as well. I think they're so beautiful like that. I've been planning on making another one. Bettas are definitely addicting. I'm right there with ya! :D

I like Turk & Jonnie's unique coloring :D but all your bettas are beautiful! Waita saving Merlin! The poor little guy looks so beat up...This may be a trick of light, but the shadowing above his eye gives the illusion (or is it?) of a sad looking eye brow. It's as if he's making a sad face because he lost the fight. Anyway, he's a beautiful fish & for a first post, this story is a great splash :D Thanks for sharing an uplifting fish tale, and the photos!:)

:D You've got some beautiful fellows there. Great job rescuing the two fighters. I came across a cup in Walmart several months ago with two in the cup, but they had both already died. Glad you got to your guys in time.

Welcome jmejemima! :D
I love all your lil' betta boys! They all look so nice. Now I must resist the urge to get another one right now as I have no room. :shifty: unless I make some...lol

Luckily they don't seem too bad off from being together. Usually they fish til the death, and the winner normally dies as well. But they're nice, wait until you can't see the room for the bettas :)
