i have just had my first fry the platy has just dropped could only find one though there may be more, he is in the breeding tank a floating one what do i feed him how much and how often

p.s any other reivent info would be good

:D I feed my fry a special power called First Bites that I bought at Petco, but crushed flakes would work just as well. Fry need to eat around three times a day, but only a little bit. Hope this helps! ;)

You could always try Liquifry No 2 that you should be able to get from Pets At Home. I use this for a few days and then move on to a very finely crushed flake food.

I feed my platie fry finely crushed flakes. I mean really fine. And I feed mine (20 fry) two medium flakes two to three times a day. I also took some pelets and ground them up with a Mortar and Pestle. Platie fry are pretty big so they are not too small to eat finly crushed flakes. Mine are 2 weeks old. I did not spend my money on store bought dry fry food or Liquifry. But live food would help them grow like microworms or baby brineshrimp. I was not prepared for fry when mine were born (two days after I bought her). I wanted to have bbs or microworm cultures started before I had fry. So my fry have only survived on finely crushed flakes.
As for only finding one, if you have a well planted tank as I do you may not find them. I found three fry a week ago hiding in the plants when I was moving the plants around. Fry are good at hiding that's how they survive. If you want more fry and if you know which female has had the fry, seperate her close to 4 weeks from her last batch of fry. It is hard for me to tell when mine are going to have fry, so I put lots of plants in my tank. But I am looking foward to two weeks from now. I hope that my experience helps you. This forum helped me two weeks ago.

yes, follow the above suggestions...feed as often, but not too much food at one time so it doesn't gunk up the container. Feed a variety of liqui fry (same as first bites), crushed flakes, brine shrimp fry, also crushed spirulina flakes (enhances color).

Good tool to get, turkey baster. You can suck up the uneaten food at the bottom of the container. You can also suck up fry to move to another container if you need to. It's great at tight corners. You may also want to add an airstone connected to an airpump in there. Although there are slits for water to get through, there's not much movement.

Personally I'm not a big fan of the liquifry stuff...it sinks to the bottom too quick for the fry to eat and tends to foul up the water. My fry from day one get special fry food...powdered green stuff..has spirulina in it....then when they are 2-3 weeks old they get crushed flakes (put them in a plastic bag and crush them fine with your fingers). As they get older and bigger crush the flakes less until they are eating the size flakes that the adults eat.

Good luck
