I had my pregnant platy in a breeding trap and she gave birth to five- two dead and three alive. the living fry are now in my fry tank. They are so tiny! I wonder what color they'll be....

My question is: Is it usual for a fish to just give birth to five? She still looks pregnant, is fat, but no gravid spot. I waited a few hours after she dropped the first five, then no more, so I let her out of the trap. Should I put her back in, might she be holding some more? Thanks.

She may give birth to more later. Depending how young she is, she may give birth to fewer fry. As they get older the numbers grow until you're pulling your hair out with all the fry.

Our platties have only given birth to a few fry at a time, but they come regular, every few weeks. They have no gravid spot now so we have a few weeks to wait. When one of ours fisrt strated showing the fry, she gave birth about 1 1/2 - 2 weeks later.
With guppies, one gave birth to about 50 last night, we can tell when she's done cause she starts trying to dig her way out, we wait about 1/2 - 1 hour when she starts doing this just in case she's got a couple more due. None came.
We have never seen our platties give birth, the fry just seem to be there, we saw no signs. Whether it would be different if she gave birth to more I'm not sure.

i wouldnt suggest putting her back in, this will stress her out emmensly. also, i wouldnt bother with the trap at all, it stresses her out, and unless you have agressive fish and a baren tank, a couple should survive. keep an ewye on her. chances are she will just do a huge poop :)
