You might wanna change to base from gravel to sand, And stick under that a substrate thats rich in nutrients
(I'm sure the know it all can help you there)

Whats your lighting levels?
Do you intend to give any nutrients?

The gravel is fine. I would however add some root tablets near the rooted plants to give them nutrients that way if you don't want to add in gravel or replace etc etc.

I dont really want to change to sand because IMO it looks messy unless you hoover the poo out every five seconds, that and it will be a bugger to change

I have 2x 20watt T8 tubes.

Im feeding them API Leaf Zone once a week as per the instructions on the bottle.

I assume root tabs, help the roots to establish or is that too obvious?

Root tabs are nutrition, You stick them in the gravel by the plant, it feeds the roots
