This is the first time I've had Ancistrus, I just bought 2 of them a couple of days ago at ~2" :D.
Just wondering about a couple of things, like IDing them, I think they are Ancistrus sp. (L279) - but I'm not entirely sure. See that's based solely on this picture off planet catfish, so what does everyone think comparing with my pics below?
The other thing is about feeding, so far they don't seem very interested in algae wafers, and all they have been eating is my bogwood(or the algae on it) and courgette. Though my Siamese algae eaters seem to have pretty much taken over the courgette  . Are Ancistrus nocturnal at all? I've been putting algae wafers in at night for my syno, do you think they are more likely to eat them or the courgette at night?
Here's one if them, I do love these guys. Please tell me what you think :).

nah looks like a common to me, yes they are nocturnal but will see some activity during the day all depends on the bn i always feed mine before i go to bed thats when i turn the lights off and the foods always gone in the morning greedy buggers :hyper: give them time to discover what algae waffers are once they do they will eat them like smarties nice male in the first pic couldbe wrong think i see some bristles there and female in the second
if you have any more questions feel free to ask.

cheers dane

Thanks for the info!
So what species is the common? A.temminckii? There was no pic on planet catfish and fishbase' pic didn't show enough of the fish to tell  . Actually, just found this, but that's the only pic I can find with the white tips on the fins - do only juveniles have these maybe?

Right about the bristles :D. I tried to get a possible male and female, but at what age can you really tell?

You can sex them at about 2" and yes it does look like you have a male and female there. The common brown does not have an L number as far as I'm aware and just goes by Ancistrus Sp.

Cool thanks, that's what they were sold as :good:. And I'm pretty glad I've got a male and female :D. I'd like to hope I'll get lucky and experience them breeding, even if the eggs will be eaten (just as well - they are possibly brother and sister  ).

So does this the mean the common browns haven't been given a species name or an L number yet?

And if not, does that mean the common browns are new to the hobby or something, and that previously the standard bristlenose was something else?

givin time they will breed givin the right tank to live (will make things alot easyier) you will find when people first buy thier first pair they come from the same tank in the lfs and are bound to be bro and sis as long as you dont breed loads of the them you have nothing to worry about just in a few batches sway your female with someone for another female as this will stop any deformaties in the future and will still have healthy fry and bigger batches survive most ancistrus speices have an l number all i know is that a common is known as an ancistrus sp3

cheers dane

Thanks a lot, I googled Ancistrus sp.3 ant that's exactly what I've got :good:.

Though at work they have changed the label over the tank and are calling them 'l150 Ancistrus', because this is apparently what they were imported as, however they clearly are not  .
